A day at the stables

The new place looks great Janine!!

Actually, the muck heap is great in cold weather, it's so warm it steams.

My dad just flipped our pile the other day...I walked out back to dump the wheelbarrow and it was so steamy. It is always warm, but it gets extra hot when it gets some extra oxygen in the mix!

Nobody can appreciate the warmth of horse poo like a girl who loves horses

So true...

The next step will be the other large turkey-rearing shed (virtually derelict) being taken down for John's workshop area and garage for his Ford trucks and hotrod. Then the old stables and piggery will come out to make way for a new paddock. The old turkey slaughter/plucking building will be our tea room and possibly a toilet block. (Which will save all the 'boots off'to use the facilities indoors)

I think turkey rearing is sick and wrong.
Kim hasn't got any turkeys, Wade. The former owners of her house used to raise pigs and turkeys though and the old stables were a livery yard business.
Oooooooooooooh, I forgot, John has promised we can have some chickens when he has the chance to build a big coop and run, so we can have some pampered hens to lay lovely eggs! Too many foxes to have the chickens out free-range though.

Another Merlin day today.
Because I was naughty letting Merlin gallop like a looney last weekend, I had to have an hour's schooling lesson. Kim made me walk, trot and canter standing up in the stirrups, allegedly to improve my balance. She is evil! I think the cold conditions (we had wintery, sleety showers later in the afternoon) are the only thing that doused the agony of burning thigh and calf muscles. I feebly tried to protest that I have no desire to be a cossack, so she made me do it all over again, and again, and again!
I was under the threat of having the reins taken away if I dared use them for balance, so my arms and shoulders are also on fire from keeping my hands as low as possible with a light contact.
Then Kim schooled Curo, while I took some nice pictures of him in action and of the light aircraft that fly overhead to a local airfield.
Mucking out was light duties in comparison, hence the delight on my face in this photo!

The new stalls look really nice! I'm also jealous of the fact that it looks dry and pretty there- we've had nothing but rain the past couple of weeks. It's getting to the point where I may have to park my car at the entrance to my barn and then hike (or swim) back to where my horse is...

Thanks! It's such luxury to be out of the winter weather. Tying the boys up inside to groom them, tack up and later on to change the rugs was wonderful, especially in the afternoon when the snow flurries started!

A lovely day today, despite terrible weather. I got picked up early, then Kim had to go out teaching and schooling, so I had the place to myself.
With the boys rugged up and turned out I got to work, mucking out their stables. I'm finally getting used to dealing with straw instead of shavings and how the dirty blighters hide their poo. I did get a litle bit obsessive over finding every single little poop. Then I laid huge fluffy beds and banks.
When Kim got back we had lunch then went out for a hack in pouring rain. We took another different bridle path, quite a steep downwards slope and very slippery, so I was glad there were no puddles and I could get Merlin to pick his path down in a sensible manner. In places there is quite a steep drop sideways too with the path about 3' wide at best. Then a wide loop around and uphill work up an even steeper path. Merlin was very willing and working hard today. I did feel sorry for him until we hit the field to go home and he wanted to canter! It was far too slippery so I had to bridge the reins and keep him steady, he wasn't nearly as worn out by the uphill work as I'd thought. Visions of ending up like a Thelwell cartoon, dumped in the mud flashed through my head.
No photos from today, too much rain for getting the camera out.

That sounds like a wonderful day...well, aside from the poop part. I really miss riding and love looking at your photos. Glad you had such a nice day in spite of the rain. :)

Thanks............I actually really like the poop part too!:roflmao: I hate when I fluff the straw and find one I missed, I have to have a skip bucket for last minute poop-removal!

Now see, that would be so perfect for Dean's guilty pleasures thread, you're so ladylike and sweet. I can just see it....

They may not be shameful things-- but theyre things that may not seem characteristic for you to be interested in.

Hi, I'm Janine, and I'm obsessed with finding hidden poop! :wavey:

I HATE finding a missed one, too- it almost pains me to leave it in there if I've already dumped the rest of it. I'm pretty OCD when it comes to cleaning my stall! And riding in the rain sounds like so much fun- all of your pictures are so pretty, so I can only imagine what it's like when everything is green and smells like rain :)

:roflmao: I'm surprised you think I'm ladylike! I grew up a total tomboy, I still prefer grubbing around in the countryside or at the beach than the hell that is shopping. I sort of feel I'm putting on an act when I'm in civilised company!

OMGosh, we're so alike! I despise shopping unless it's for the boys, and I'm way more comfortable in hiking boots and tank tops than a dress anyday!

Today was really more brown than green, squishing through thick mud.
Now, because of a horrendous shift pattern from tomorrow, (night, night, night, night off, night, night, night!) I won't be able to ride until the 27th or 28th. So, I shall make sure I keep up my reading and posture exercises. I use the Heather Moffett site a lot as well as the exercises in her book so I don't forget stuff or lose ground I've gained in between sessins with Merlin.

I do have some pretty, girlie clothes, but they don't get much wear. Shorts or trousers most of the time for me. Thankfully Kim and Cathy are just as averse to shopping expeditions as I am. We favour a ram-raid style of shopping, in, choose item, buy, out.

Part of my problem has stemmed around finances and body type. I grew up in a household where we could never aford what I did want to buy and my body type is large boned on an short body, so even when I was a size 7 many people considered me overweight by how I looked and being very short most clothes never fit correctly. Esp. when pre-breast reduction my body size was 7-9 with a size 18 chest!! Really, it just made me hate shopping and hate being a girl, so I chose jeans and t-shirts almost all of the time. Even to this day I generally hate to shop unless it is for someone else.

I'm a fan of the ram-raid style of shopping, also. I hate looking for clothes I like (since I never find any) and taking time to try them on... there are just so many other things I could be doing! Not to mention the fact that when I'm not in my work clothes, I look like I only own one outfit anyway, since every night I wear jeans and the same "barn" hoodie when I go to feed my horse...

I'm sorry you don't get to ride for so long! It has been really wet here, so I can't remember the last time I rode... I think our arena is just now drying out, so hopefully soon I can ride again...
