A few questions...

I just got a hatchling today, and I need a few questions answered.

Exactly what do i do to a "pinkie" before feeding, and when?

Is it okay to use tap water for the dish?

When should i try handling it? when i attempt to, it gets real scared.

thanks - Jimmeh

I am somewhat new to this snake thing too. so as far as feeing it im not sure because my BF does that.

but i can help you with you question about handling the lil guy.
when i got my lil one we were told to let it sit in the cage for three days so it can acclimate itself. you dont want to stress out the animal. once you let the three days pass i would limit handling to once a day if not everyother day. someone on this site told me that the hatchling thinks your gunna eat him. so if he strikes at you and you leave him alone he will just continue doing it. so if he strikes, pick him up let him know you dont want him for lunch. good luck and i hope when he is ready you can show us some pics.

nice...

good luck with your snake.

pinkie mice - well, it depends, are you offering your snake live or frozen food? if live just place it in the feeding container and let the snake go for it when it's ready, if frozen thaw out the mouse before giving it to the snake. you can either let it set out at room temperature for a couple hours or put it in a bag and run it under warm water for a few minutes.

it is okay to use tap water, but i usually keep a bottle of spring water handy because water in my area is pretty bad, chemically disgusting. if you drink the tap water then your snake will be fine with it.

if you got the snake today i would wait three days before handling it so that it has time to acclimate to it's new environment. if you got it from a store you can probably handle it tomorrow because it didn't travel as far and won't likely be as stressed out. i got my first snake from a store and immediately began handling it and it was fine, but i've since learned that it's good to give it a little time to adjust. you don't want to stress the little guy out too much. it will continue to be a little nervous when you go to pick it up until it gets used to your scent and it's new home. my hatchling has just now begun to calm down and i've had him since november...but he escaped for three months in january, haha. you should wait at least 48 hours after it's eaten before handling it so that it has plenty of time to digest it's meal.

I am also new and just go my first snake yesterday, but I have done a lot of research and think other people will back me up on most of these things:

1) For the pinkies if using f/t make sure it is completely thawed. Also, many people suggest making small cuts along it, as this aids in digestion.

2) Some people just use tap water, others bottled, etc. It depends on the person. I went to the local walmart and got a gallon jug of spring water, so I don't have to worry about any chemicals or other things in my local water.

3) There are many posts about when to handle and how to deal with a scared or apprehensive snake. I suggest doing a search on "handling."

Hopefully someone else can help out with this as well. And as everybody on the forum will suggest, check out The Corn Snake Manual by Kathy Love it is a great resource.

Take a bowl of warm water, place the frozen pinkie into a plastic bag, let it set in warm water for a while in order for the pinkie to thall, and what I do is keep feeling the pinkie and make sure it's warm, then feed it to your snake.

Tap water is fine.

Wait a few days until your snake has adjusted to it's new surrounding before you handle it, this will make it then less stressful for you and the snake when you do attempt to handle it again.

yea...the cornsnake manual...

is the best resource available and the updated version was just published last month i believe. you can order on-line at www.cornutopia.com.

hehe...it's all good, zywatt, i always repeat advice that someone posted previously.

Depends on your water. My county has started using chloramines in the water which is unsafe for reptiles. I've always used purified water for mine.
