Adding Bedding

Is there a certain way to add or replace bedding in the terrarium? I was told it needed more so I added a bag but he doesn't seem to like it. He has two things like hollowed out stones that he hides under but since I added new bedding he seems to prefer sleeping on top of them, like Snoopy slept on top of his dog house.
I intended to remove him and clean out the terrarium but he appeared to not like the idea of me touching him so I removed the two stones and the water dish, scooped out what poop I found, and just three bunches of bedding all over, covering him except for his head, then replaced what I had taken out.
Does the bedding require being patted down, or wet down, or whatever?
