Air purifier's

I was just wondering if anyone has tryed using air purifiers to keep the smell down, and if so, do they work or would be a waste of money? Thanks.

Dan

What I do know about air purifiers is that if you wish to get one -- as my allergist has recommended that I do -- that you should get one that is a HEPA air purifier because the ionizing ones basically send pollutant ions into the air, which is bad bad bad. Needless to say, I have one of the ionizing ones...and now I need to figure out what to do with it. :uhoh: (I bought it at a friend's recommendation...&^%$it!) Anyway...while using the aforementioned purifier, though, I did find that my allergies decreased and my air seemed "cleaner", any smell at all did dissipate.

(Hopefully I can return it to the vendor with only a small penalty because it hasn't been too much past the 30-day limit...)

I only felt the need to get one, though, because I was at my wit's end with my allergies, asthma & just constantly feeling sick...I live in a city, I teach -- I'm already surrounded by a multitude of germs beyond what opening the windows (*my* preferred way of purifying the air!) could do for me, and I wanted to at least feel better/breathe better at home. If it wasn't for that, I'd simply just open the windows & leave it at that. :)

I used one for awhile for allergies as well. They are a pain to clean, unless you get a disposable cartridge one, but then you have to replace them often and it's expensive in the long run. They also put a different smell in the air that's hard to explain, but close to an electric smell mixed with plastic. Might have just been the brand I had, but I would go somewhere where they are displayed so you can turn it on and see for yourself... Personally, if it's just the smell you want to get rid of, I would get a Glade plug-in...

Thanks for the info. I should have mention the Hepa one's. I have been looking around comparing price's, finding some rather expensive. I will probably get a smaller one since the room I have the mice in is not that big. As far as the glade plug in's...they don't work. Thanks again.

Reducing the smell

Have you tried adding 2-3 teaspoons per gallon of drinking water for the mice? I know first-hand that it helps.

I'm not sure what you are asking? 2-3 teaspoons of what? They have water bottles in the cage.

2-3 teaspoons of vanilla extract. I have heard this before - it is supposed to reduce the amonia smell of the mice and rats. I haven't tried it as of yet, but have considered doing it to reduce the smell.

What kind of bedding do you have the mice on? I know some beddings actually add to the stink instead of reducing it.

...vanilla extract

I guess i didn't proof read.

I would also strongly suggest an exhaust fan. Something else worth mentioning is that certain brands of lab chow, such as Mazuri, even contain specific ingredients to help reduce the smell of mice.

After a year and a half of raising 20 colonies of 1.4 mice and 10 colonies of 1.2 rats i gave up and went back to buying in bulk. I was working 12 hr shifts at the time and spent WAY more time on the rodents than my 100 or so snakes. Once I figured in the time it was taking me to raise my own feeders, I don't think I was saving any money. It was nice having live pinks when I need them, though. I got lucky because the owner's husband of one of the local pet stores I sell snakes to started a rodent breeding business so now I can order exactly what I need without any shipping cost.
