One of the things that has come out of the recent success I've seen is a new appreciation for where I live. I live in some of the most beautiful country in the world. I say that not having traveled much, but I believe it.

I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Behind the downtown skyline you can see the Rocky Mountains. Since I just bought my first new car, I thought I'd take it on a short road trip through some of the Alberta countryside and show you all just how beautiful it is.

Just a reminder :p

First stop: The town I grew up in, Cochrane, Alberta.

Cochrane is about 15 minutes northwest of Calgary and my parents moved there in 1980, when I was one year old.

The population was about 3000 when we moved there, took many years to reach 5000 and then exploded. In the last 10 or so years, Cochrane went from about 6000 or so to 15000. It is my hometown and I hope to retire there someday.

One of the new subdivisions is on a hill overlooking the Cochrane Ranche Provincial Historic Site. It's a valley on the North side of Cochrane that will never, ever be developed.

So that gorgeous park behind the lot will always be there. And when you step out the front door of that soon-to-be-house? You see this:

That's why I want to live in Cochrane.

But I'm not done yet. Continue west from Cochrane along the 1A highway and you see these along the way to Canmore:

The city of Canmore, less than an hour west of Calgary, is nestled right within the Rocky Mountains.

All of those photos were from the same Safeway parking lot. I just turned in a circle. At that point I got a call from a friend and decided to make my way home. Along the way you get treated to views like this:

Jealous? :)

I hope to do some hiking this year in Kananaskis country, a massive national park here in Alberta. Stay tuned to this thread for more pictures of the gorgeous Alberta landscape. :)

Great photo's. I really like all of your mountain shot's; especially photo 8, and 9 too. Good job!.

Jealous.. Naw, been there.. Beautiful area, and probably to many blood relatives to know.. You should have kept going and got some pictures a little further down the road at Lake Louise, and the Bow River.. I would think the falls ( am I mistaken and thinking Switzerland ?? ) would be wild at this time of the year..

Banff is something else.. I would have ditched the friends for that ride.. You can actually breath there.. Send some of that frsh air down to my neck of the woods, would not mind it one bit!

if i was you id be a mountain climbin man. haha. i love climbing and backpacking acrossed places. there any good trails there? looks really nice. thanks for sharing

Absolutely beautiful.

I remember in 6th grade we had to do a project where 2 students paired up and had to pick a canadian province to do a project on. Me and my partner somewhat randomly picked Alberta, wrote to the tourism department and got tons of info, and did a great project. Since then Alberta has always been one of my top places I'd like to visit in Canada.

I love how in a lot of the pics it looks like a nice mountain chalet town. Nice looking building that really fit the environment.

Wow, nice pics. I miss Canmore. I lived near there in a little town called Seebe, working for a pipeline company shortly after welding school. It was one of the few jobs I've had where you actually wanted to get up and go to work just because it was soooooo beautiful. I found a great place to go cliff diving while I was there, and that was just exhilarating diving into that baby blue, ice cold, water. Until I cracked my jaw anyway, then it just plain hurt. Thanks for posting those, brought back some good memories.
