Alligator lizards in the air...

I almost weed whacked this poor fellow today, I thought I had hit him -I'm very glad I missed. After catching him and checking him out to make sure he was ok I grabbed my camera & took a couple of pics, then let him go. I guess it was a male, after biting and musking me (there's gratitude for ya) he everted his hemis...lol, nice to know this big guy is residing in my back yard :)

man that's so weird, here in maryland i would have never ever found lizards. the closest thing i've EVER found here when searching in the woods when i was little was salamanders, common frogs and toads and black rat snakes...

I love those lizards. I've never caught one that didn't bite me. And you're right, they can bite pretty hard. My friend got a chunk taken out of his finger last year by one.

Alligator lizards remind me of little dinosaurs, they are so cool.
Though I posted before how I got my stubborn feeding corn to eat a baby bluebelly, I don't think I could do that to one of these alligator lizards! I like them a lot. This guy was so very lucky not to get hit by the weed whip line, I would have felt awful if I had tagged him. I was trimming around some bricks and after I got done with the one section I saw him wriggling, at first I thought it was a snake, the way they move is very similar. I don't know how close I came to hitting him but I thought for sure I had, couldn't find a mark on him though. whew!

I used to catch those all the time when I was young in Oregon. When they bite you the marks look like little purple hearts...

Wow. I've never seen one of those before. I dont think we have them out here in Arizona. I've always wondered what an Alligator Lizard was, too. They're pretty darn cute, I wouldnt mind having one as a pet! haha

lucky lil thing lol
i miss those lil guys they were all over my elemantery school, i'd spend my afternoons chasing them and begging my mom to let me keep them, with my arms covered in dirt, leaves and poo. :grin01:

i once caught one that was nearly a foot long, at least he seemed like it to my 9 year old self lol

They can get pretty long, usually the tails are a bit longer too. I think my specimen had lost his tail at some point and regenerated it, it seemed a bit stubby compared with the other alligator lizards I've seen/caught.
I don't know if these guys would make great pets. I was surprised when he bit me how strong it was, just like a real alligator's jaw - he took his time letting go too, lol

Maybe he was looking for a date? ... I mean, a woman with her own weed-trimmer has to have some value on the dating scene, right?

:crazy02:

Interesting lookin' critter. I don't think I've ever seen one before.

:roflmao: I do landscaping for a living. I've found the female with a weed trimmer thing scares more males away than it attracts, maybe it's the grass clippings all over my clothes.
It's not easy being green :sobstory:
