Alternative to Snake Racks. ***Rubbermaid Drawers***

I am sure that all of you have seen the storage drawers that rubbermaid makes- the ones that at first glance look like killer snake racks? Obviousley upon closer inspection they are unsuited as they have large gaps near the lid.

My question is has anyone succesfully modified these to make them snake proof? If so how did you do it?

Also, i saw some iris tubs that are singles that can stack. These look like they would work without any modification at all. They are the large single stackers made by Iris in the Lowes storage isle. They are fully enclosed on sides and top unlike the rubbermaid. Anyone using these?

I am going to pick a few up and see how they work. It looks like heat cable/ tape would be easy to install on these as they have open bottoms.

These look like clean, light weight, and affordable alternatives to the traditional snake racks.

Here is the link to some similiar ones. The ones at Lowes are a little different and cost about $12 per unit. They look like they around the 30 quart or liter size (i cant remember if they are quart or liter) that we all use in our racks for adults.

I might have tried those.. I bought a rack from Walmart once that was labeled as something for sewing storage (?).. It had 5 different 'tubs' that snapped closed before you would slide them in to their slots. They were only 3 1/2 inches high or so, but I figured they'd work fine for babies. I even drilled holes in the back and installed a heat cable so everything looked perfect.

However the plastic was really strangely brittle and would even off-gas when the heat was on. GROSS. I never had the snakes in it but I 'ran' it to dial in the temps and would notice the smell when I opened the lids. Also one after another the snaps started to break off right away so I considered it a total failure..

If this sounds like it could be the same thing let me know and I'll post a picture here.

If not, post one for me, cause I'm always looking for something better..

Oh and stay out of that fire!! I heard it's even jumping the 5 freeway now, YIKES...

I know what you are talking about and these are different. These are basically just drawers that you pull out. You do not need to snap a lid shut. I am thinking that these will work with the heat as they are made of the same plastic that the tubs we use in racks are made of.

Yeah, SD is a war zone right now. We have fires surrounding us. It looks like things are getting better though- i had all the snakes packed and ready to go just hours ago!!!!

Hey Chris,

I considered it, but after thinking about it, I decided it was WAY too difficult. It'd probably be easier for me to modify a bookcase to add doors. :)

If you decide to go with it, let us know how it works.
