my new snake climbed his cage today i was so happy.. its 2.5 feet up (his tank is 4.5 feet long, 2.5 feet high and 2 feet deep)... buuuut, hes still really scared every time i go near the cage, hes been in there for 2 days now and has been all over it and seems to have no prob exploring, but should i be concerned that hes so scared? he immediately goes into an "about to strike" pose when i come to look at him or to find him to make sure hes still in there... i had a chameleon for 2 years that never grew and i spent a ton of money taking him to specialists so im really paranoid about doing everything right for my new corn.. i know the tank is large for a baby but its covered in hides and plants and vines and he doesnt seem to mind the space. but he was so tame at the store where i got him, i fed him and held him all before i decided to get him and he was great... soo, how much longer will it take for him to adjust to the move? i dont want him to constantly want to snap, but i dont want to stress him out.. i spent 2 months researching them and reading the forum and all before i got one but it sure doesnt come close to whats its like actually having one.. sorry if my questions are long and neurotic, im just paranoid something will go wrong again with my reptile
Usually you should let your new cornsnake be alone for about 1 week... but I know that its hard especially since you want to hold it!!! the reason why some people dont like housing their baby corns in big enclousers is that when you want to feed your snake, it might not find the food in a big home! I wouldnt worry much about your new corn... they are the easiest snakes to take care of, and are very friendly, most babies are a bit nippy since they are defensless... I would only suggest that you give your lil baby some time to get used to the area... then after about 1 week I would try to hold him everyday... you have to get him to recongize that you are not a threat to him... after he realizes that your arent a threat he'll be more then happy to allow you to pick him up!
Babies can take months before they stop "running" away or trying to bite you when you come near or go in the cage. Its natural, but it goes away. My adults lazily lounge out of their hides all day and don't even flinch when I come near. It just takes time.
And yes, you would give a week of rest without disturbing the snake at all. No lifting hides up to find him, no holding, nothing. Get him on a regular eating schedual for a few weeks then add in handling after he is well settled in. Say you fed on Sundays and he has eaten, on Tuesday or preferablly wednesday try holding him for 3-5 minutes, then again on Saturday, and again on Sunday before his next feeding. Do this for a few weeks and things will be fine. But he needs a week of pure rest and no disruptions when you first get a snake
