So I bought some cornsnakes.... last year? From a very nice lady that lives about an hour from me.
I started my drive at night and we talked for what seemed like ever, but in the end, I got three new corns to add to my growing collection at the time.
I got to hold all of them, look them over, and they all seemed nice, good temperaments and just overall awesome snakes.
Well, the snow corn and the miami phase kept their wonderful personalities, but the amel corn... she became Missy the Pissy.
In the beginning it was just me she hated.
We would battle for hours over her water dish and where to place her pinkies, or even if she was going to LET me feed her.
Sometimes my husband could hold her and everything would be okay with him, but I think she knew I took her from the lady she was with previously and she hated me for it.
For about two months, several months later, we had to house our reptiles with a very close friend (who happened to have a herpetology license back in the day, and had passed all his tests and at one time used to own hots), and I told him about her and he said "no problem ill tame her down".
And for a while after we got our babies back, she was very tame.
But the hatrid returned.
I was determined to get her to like me.
I felt like a child with a cat that kept running away and hiding.
LOVE ME DAMMIT.
So this has gone on for almost a year and tonight I was in there, cleaning, feeding as usual, watching my miami phase (now named Brian), and my sweet snow corn (sugar), take the food from the tongs every so gentlemanly and timidly.
I enjoy feeding all of my reptiles.
They eat with gusto every time and its a pleasant experience.
Even with my small normal Diablo, who looooks at it... mayyybe he wants it... hes not suuuure... YES! STRIKE! Gobble gobble.
But I saved the best for last.
Yes.
Missy.
Missy the Pissy.
I was determined tonight. For she got me twice on my arm and once on my hand while I was dangling the mouse from the tongs.
And honestly, I was a bit mad.
How dare you bite and strike at me when I have provided you with the most awesome-est of care!?
How dare you hate me!
So I stuck on my gloves and I repeatedly reached in there, determined she would eat (she hasnt eaten in a month because of this hatrid) this time.
So, as im holding her she locks her lower half around my other hand, and im effectively snake-cuffed.
I call for my husband and im like, just pick up those tongs and the next time she opens her mouth at me to be nasty, just stick the mouse in there.
SHES GOING TO EAT IF I HAVE TO BE UP ALL NIGHT FOR THIS!!!
So he does, and she sits there, starring back at me with her pretty orangy eyes, glaring.
And starts working her jaws.
Wait.
What ...
She begins eating.
Slowly at first, and then more as time goes on.
Dont move! I tell my husband. Stay perfectly still! You ARE A STATUE!
We stand there for fifteen minutes while shes got half her body hanging out of my hands (the grip on my other "free" hand is loosened by now) and continues to gobble down the meal we have presented to her.
It felt like force feeding, but when she was done I gently laid her down in her tub and she curled into her hide and stayed there.
No more tail buzzing, no more striking, no more pissy attitude.
I have just fed my most difficult snake, while holding her.
