An Unfortunate Update

Well, today started out great. Ziggy head eaten yesterday and was relaxing in his warm hide.

Then for reasons unknown to me, he regurged yet again. I am devastated.

I called the East Bay Vivarium where I got him from and told them my situation. I then made the diffictult decision to return Ziggy to their expert care.

I drove the 2.5 hours to the vivarium and said a very tearful good-bye to my friend.

I am finding solace in the fact that they are very expierenced care takes of all their animals and they were very optimistic about Ziggy's future. They were glad that I cared about him so much that I was willing to put him back in their care. But still, I'm crying while I write this.

They were very understanding and said I could come back anytime I wanted and get another snake if I was ready. I thought about it for about a half an hour and myself, "Why am I grieving? He's not dead! He is now in the care of very competent people!" Sean (the man helping me) also made the point of, I have a viv all set up, minus a critter.

I really wanted a ghost corn snake, but they had just sold the bugger that morning. There was another anery, but it reminded me too much of Ziggy. They he pulled out a beautiful Ball Python and I took to him immediatly. He was $50, but Sean was very nice and gave him to me for $25. I also bought another thermometer for was cool side (which is suppose to be around 80) and they gave me a mouse to feed him for $1.00.

So there I was with my boyfriend and best friend driving the next 2.5 hour leg home with another member of our crew.

Wish me Luck!

Sorry to hear about Ziggy, but like you said he's not dead and is in good hands, fingers crossed that he'll be o.k. Good luck with your Ball Python, lets see some pictures.

I took one without the flash, but it didn't come out very well.

Once he is settled in more I'll take some pictures and show you guys.

One thing that made my trip a little better...there was this turtle at the vivarium and all he was trying to do for the hour that we were there is get it on with this other turtle that didn't want anything to do with him. It was the funniest thing I have seen in awhile. I took a picture lol.

Well he's gone back to care, but I don't understand why you replaced him as soon as he's better why aren't you bringing him back home? :shrugs:

He didn't get better, he regurged again. He held down one meal and then that happened yesterday. I asked them once he was healthy again if I could take him home again. The guy said that would be really hard to keep track of considering he had a alot of cornsnakes to take care of. But he would try. :shrugs: I really miss him. I'm going to call in a month and see how he is doing.

Shorty you made the best decision for Ziggy. I know it must have been difficult for you to leave him there.

Congrats on the new snake.

Err I meant as soon as he's better at the store why aren't you bringing him home instead of filling up his home. maybe I should have just placed more punciation in the sentence.

Sorry to hear about Ziggy, Frankie.. I hope he does well..
Cool about your new pick up.. just a bit larger than Ziggy though..
LOL

Just a bit larger LoL. He's a sweetheart. His name is Irwin.

I hope I am able to pick Ziggy up as well if he does well at the vivarium.

Sorry to hear about your ordeal, I am sure it wasn't easy on you.

Just a small side-note, put more emphasis on heating with the python, pythons in general lounge lots of time in the warm spots when compared to colubrids.

Best of luck!!!

and keep us posted on Ziggy too if you get him back, I am sure you did well by him.

Sorry about Ziggy... I hope Sean and the folks at the store can work with him and get him well.

Good luck with the BP. Remind me, please... did you ever get a thermostat for your UTH?

Everyone at the store was very positive about Ziggy's health. :) But it was still heartbreaking for me to have to give him up.

I currently have Irwin's UTH connected to a rheostat that I built. I'm finding heating a BP tank much more difficult then heating a corn snake's tank.

The cool side needs to be about 80-84. I went out and bought a digital Acu-Rite thermometer, put the probe in his warm hide and the actual unit in the cool side. The cool side right now is reading 77 with a 100W heating lamp on that side (I just turned it back on) I plan on getting a 50W later today after I get paid so I can just keep that on at all times. The down-side to that is, it just sucks the moisture right out of the air. But I think temps are more important right now. I'm going to put a wet cloth on 1/2 the mesh tank later on.

Oh his warm side is still changing a bit, but in the general area of 89-93.

Woot.
