Another Double Clutch

Thinks2Much

Animal Enthusiast
Well, I had a feeling it was going to happen... my female creamsicle double-clutched without being placed with the male again, and she is over 10 years old. She laid 23 eggs for me her first clutch, 21 of which were good. She laid 25 again last night, 52 days after her first clutch, and it looks like at most 3 of them are viable, probably only 1. It is so upsetting that she went through all that for almost nothing.

It would be easier to deal with the sad news if there were some happy news to balance it, like 21 pippies, but not yet. I am sure it is better for them that they haven't, but I am impatient! She is a wonderful snake - great temperament, great eater, and apparently great fertility. I hope she at least passes all that on to her babies. :)

I have attached a picture of her in her egg box, stuffed with 25 eggs.

That's the problem with 2nd clutches. My female barely got some weight on her when she stopped eating again. She laid 16 eggs and 6 look good. It seems like a lot of work and an awful strain on the body to go through for only 6 eggs. My female wasn't reintroduced to a male either.

Good luck with your about to hatch babies and I hope you get at least 1 good one out of the 2nd clutch.

Thanks for the vote of courage and the well wishes. :)

It was odd, she ate until she shed for the first clutch, but stopped eating a couple of weeks before she shed this time. She doesn't look too much worse for the wear, though. I hope it isn't just appearances. My male actually looked worse for a while there because he went on food strike during mating season and then escaped his viv and was lost in the house for 3 weeks. He has eaten good the last 6 weeks, though, and is finally looking truly healthy again.
