Anyone ever tried frogs?

Im from oklahoma and there has been loads of rain and literally billions of frogs (not toads ther are toads as well but they have a poison so i know not to try feeding them to leonard ((mycornsnake))) so i was curiouse as to if anyone has gathered tadpoles and raised them for there snakes? only would take about a week or so to get big enough and since there cold blooded you wouldnt have to worry to much about freezing them and them suffering dont slam me as i am only asking if it would be ok not saying ive done it yet

hey, im no expert but i say go for it. IF---and this is a big if--- you can ensure that you are able to provide frogs for the duration of the snake's life. or at least be able to scent a mouse using a frog. I say this because oftentimes when a snake finds its favorite food it won't eat anything else. like i said tho, im no expert.

I don't know about the frog thing, but I could not resist saying hi to another Okie! I was born and raised in Tulsa...by the way: How's the weather there? (July and August in OK is but a distant memory thank God!...HUMID AND HOT I am sure)

actually we have gotten massive amounts of rain so its just humid but august is just around the corner so who knows hehe keystone lake was 35 feet above norm !! but i was born and raised in tulsa i still love it here its like the variety pack for weather we had snow in feb for petes sake hehe

I have seen many on here recommend against feeding wild prey, because of disease. susan

yeah, but if he's raising tadpoles to be feeder frogs, and then freezing the frogs once they're big enough... the risk is significantly lower. especially when you consider freezing kills a lot of bacteria. also, you could thaw them fast by dipping for a few seconds in boiling hot water, which kills off anything the freezing missed. i'd be more concerned with the snake refusing to eat anything else.

My only complaint

I guess I complain about July and August because I had to go out and do field work including mark recaptures in a field full of ragweed taller than me (yes I am just barely over 5 feet). I remember sweating before the sun ever came up and having pieces of ragweed stuck to my face because of the sweat...oh yeah, and of course being sick for two weeks after the experience!
I went to RSU in Claremore for Environmental Conservation. They always had us trapping mamals in freezing, sleety weather, seining rivers when the water was too cold, and out in the field during the terribly hot allergy conditions! Aah, such memories! I do love Oklahoma and miss a lot about it, but I sure enjoy the Colorado weather and the cool down every night.

I also don't miss the ticks, fleas, and chiggers!

It's not a good idea. Even tadpoles can be exposed to various toxins, insecticides, etc.

Then there is the issue of what to do if the snake won't eat anything BUT frogs, and your source dries up.

I'd stick with mice or rats, they're cheap and easy to obtain.

The frogs might also be an endangered or protected species and you could get in trouble collecting a lot of tadpoles. Even if not, frogs are scarce enough these days, we shouldn't be going out of our way to collect and kill them.

Yeah frogs are really scarce these day, matter a fact the last time I saw a wild frog was about 5 years ago. I wouldn't take a chance of feeding it frogs then it rejecting mice.

I haven't even been bit by a mosquito for 4 years! I was amazed when I moved to Colorado. I can walk through the grass barefooted. I have walked under trees without ticks. (I here we have some, but have never seen them). More improtantly, I have two dogs who go outside and do not bring in fleas or itch themselves to death. You would be surprised!

I haven't even been bit by a mosquito for 4 years! I was amazed when I moved to Colorado. I can walk through the grass barefooted. I have walked under trees without ticks. (I here we have some, but have never seen them). More improtantly, I have two dogs who go outside and do not bring in fleas or itch themselves to death. You would be surprised!

I even lived 2 years right off of a lake...never saw a mosquito!
