Are 2 clips enough?

I've seen a few posts on escaped snakes and am hoping that won't happen with mine.

I'm using a 10 gal glass aquarium with a screen top and have a clip on each end. I can pull up on the corners a bit so I place a heavy book on one end which also keeps the humidity in.

I'm wondering if 4 (or more) clips might be better? Maybe 2 clips on each end placed near the corners?

When I had my first corn I had 4 clips. 1 on each side of the screen top, and they worked fine. I think that will work then.

I agree. I have four on my normal lid but on the lid that is split in half (you can open just half the screen), I have 6.

Thanks for the info. I'll get more clips for mine.

I use three clips per tank. Any clip on the back is a pain to remove, so I put a clip close to the back on the left and right sides, then one clip in the center of the front. Haven't had an escape yet.

I use 4 on my yearling amel's tank, but 6 on my sub adult king's tank. There just seemed to be too much give on his with only 4.

It also depends on what kind of clips you use. I hate the thin, c-shaped steel clips that are less than half an inch wide. (You know, the ones that come springing off the lid and hit you in the eye, or land in the most inaccessible places imagineable?) I'd never use them again. I like the wide, black metal clips that are about two inches wide. I have my rosy boa in a 15 gallon tank with one of these clips at each end. I've kept corns in 20 gallon long tanks with the same clip arrangement. The narrow clips have a lot of play in them, but not the wide ones...

I use the wide ones as well. I also construct my own screen tops so they fit tightly to the inside of the aquarium rim, and the clips grip so hard to the edge of the screen frame that I have to use a screwdriver to remove them. If they're that hard for me to budge, the snakes don't have much of a chance moving them.

I'm going to add clips for sure. I got 2 on now and some books on top.

Later when I get time I'll post about how she got up there and did a lap around the top tonight. I'll put some photos of it in the photo forum too.

I have the wide ones and need to get more. She got put to the top tonight and did a lap around the top. If she could have got out she would have. It's on her mind now.

I've got 4 clips on mine, two on the front, and one on each side, all the way to the "back." The background I have on the tank prevents me putting any on the rear of the tank, but the 4 together SEEM to do a good job. If he ever got out at school, I'd NEVER find him, so I need to make damn sure he stays where he is supposed to be. In fact, I am seriously considering using some Christmas cash to buy a locking viv for him. Just for peace of mind. :shrugs:

i just use two on each side and that seems to do the trick. those clip things are strong. i had to practically use a vice grip and two pairs of pliers to adjust a set to fit this one aquarium i have.

I almost hate to admit this, but my adult corn who is in a 55 gal long tank, I have no clips at all, have had him 4 yrs now and never escaped(crawls to the top of the tank all the time, but has never even attempted to get under the screen top). My baby that we've had for about 2 months or so I have bungie cords on his tank. Only because I had the WORST experience with babies escaping in past years.

It seems like maybe the babies want to get out there and explore but the adults know if they just hang out in the tank sooner or later dinner will be served.

lol... I never thought of that, maybe once the baby realized it doesn't need to go anywhere to get fed it will stop trying to climb out of its cage!

I've got a ten gallon with a screen top also. I've been using some books as weight on top of the screen. Then also use clear packaging tape around the lid. I'm paranoid about my little corn escaping and making a meal out of some pricey little birds! The birds are on the other end of the house, but rather be safe than sorry. plus i've found that packaging tape not only looks nicer, but is easier to take off than duct tape. :crazy02:

does anyone have one of those glass tanks with the sliding screen lids? Looks like a lock can be placed on them too. Are they any good(escape proof)? I'm going to buy a 20 long eventually and was wondering if they are worth the money.

Please, Please, please take the tape off your tank! If your snake were to get stuck to it, it could be very nasty indeed. Clips are cheap and won't injure your snake like tape will.

I have those tanks you are talking about, and love them. As long as you are careful to close the lid fully, they are virtually escape proof.

I've got the clips and the book as a back up and have found it works fine like that. My snake has developed a love of climbing and frequently get up on the ledge of the lid and does laps around the top and cant get out.

I agree with Becky about the tape. Everything I've read here and elsewhere says that snakes + any kind of tape often = injured snakes. I actually thought about it myself until I read those things.
