Hi. I have a baby lavender CS. She's the first snake I've ever owned, and proving to be the best pet ever. Only thing I wonder, would baby sunfire platys be okay to feed to my snake as an occasional treat?
Just my 3 sunfire platys have quickly gone up to about 14, most of them babies, and my fishtank just isn't large enough for all the fish. And I can't find enough people to give the platys away to.
Like I said, Thulsa Doom (my corn snake) is the first snake I've ever owned. So if anyone has info relating to platys as being unhealthy for a snake, please let me know.

Uh...yeh. I'm aware snakes eat mice. My snake readily eats a pink mouse every week. But I'm wondering if platys would be an okay occasional treat in addition to the mice. Platys are a type of fish, closely related to mollies and swordtails. I've heard that fish in certain snake diets are extremely good, I just don't know about platys being good for corn snakes.
 
I would say skip the platies and stick to mice. Corns, by nature don't eat fish, so they wont know what to do with them. Garter snakes would be more the type of snake to eat your platies. Feeder fish also pose a threat of parasites.
 
Worst of all, it's just too difficult to fillet the little buggers...

Garters are the only type of snakes that I know of that are fish eaters. For your corn, I'd stick with rodents while it's young; once it's older, you can also feed it chicks.

Many of the pet stores where I live accept fish from people. You may check to see if any of your local pet stores might do the same.
 
Back when I had them, my larger live-bearing fish were less apt to eat their own fry than guppies are. My mollies and platies never cannibalized that I saw on their own young.

I wouldn't say that fish would be a great treat for corn snakes. Fish can carry a host of parasites/diseases that reptiles can contract. Mainly intestinal worms. I've read that most live-bearers seem to have their own brand, if you will, of worms. And after having my prized cichlid become infected with them, they're a pain to get rid of.

You could do like I used to do, keep a couple of female bettas in your community tank. They hunt and devour any baby fish that crosses their path. They kept my dalmation molly numbers in check quite nicely. Other than that the suggestion of a pet shop is a good idea. Pet shops here will buy them off of you if you have enough to make it worth their while.

That and corn snakes don't eat fish in the wild, that's known of. Garters readily eat fish, as do water snakes and the like. Stick with mice for now, and good luck getting rid of your baby fish. ;)
