I just found a good deal on some Reptarium cages. I can get a 65 gallon for approx. $40 (this includes the shipping). I would turn the cage on it's side and line the bottom with plexiglass or something else (just so it's not wire mesh and can be easily cleaned). Is this a good idea/good deal? If it worked out I was going to get one for each of my snakes...

That's true, I hadn't thought of that... I could line the sides with plexiglass as well, but that would defeat my whole "on a budget" idea that these gave me... any suggestions?
 
well, to help during shedding, I know people on my BP discussion group tell you to loosely drape plastic wrap over most of the screens of vivs (leaving a little bit open for ventilation, maybe that would work for you with these... (although it may not look all that aesthetically pleasing...)
 
In my opinion those cages work best for Lizards. Not for snakes.
I would love to buy the large one, get a nice Ficus and other plants and toss in about 10 anoles, 1 male and a bunch of females. That would rock.
 
That would be a good idea... I should read up more about anoles. Do the cornsnakes go crazy over them or something? I think my last glance at the petstores had them at roughly $10/ea. Is it easy to get them to reproduce?

So the general consensus seems to be "no" for these cages working for snakes (unless I wanted to plastic-wrap them everytime someone is in shed, or throw down the cash for tons of plexiglass). Man, they were so affordable too :awwcrap:. Oh well, back to the craigslist :p.

Get to know a local petshop. There was a shop I used to go to and would get critter cages at cost. But then again, i spent money at that shop over the years. As snake cages go, a 20 gallon critter cage isnt that expensive. or you can try one of these for a corn.

I don't know why people are so freaky about humidity. Cornsnakes are not snakes that require high humidity. If the snake is getting ready to shed...use a humid hide, mist the cage daily, make a moist "tent" out of paper towel, or partially cover the mesh until it sheds. As long as the snake won't rub it's nose on the mesh, it should be perfectly fine. As far as feeding anoles....I wouldn't. Anoles and lizards in general harbor large amounts of parasites. Feeding these would require regular deworming to avoid an excess. The other thing is that anoles need UV lights etc. to keep healthy and it's a whole lot easier to find mice than anoles.
 
Wow good to know MegF. I completely forgot about the fact that I already use moist hides for most of my snakes, and plan on giving them to ALL of them once I get them set up properly (finally! This has been LONG in being completed).

And as far as the cages in that link go, they are NICE... although a little spendy for the sizes.... I dunno, maybe I am dreaming that I could get anything better for cheaper :rolleyes:.

Who said about feeding Anoles to Snakes?? I love my anoles, I have a female that has been in my possession for over 4 years.

That had me thinking someone was going to try raising them for feeding them to the snakes....
 
That was me. I guess I figured that since we "scent" pinkies with anoles to get trouble snakes to feed, that anoles were an accepted food item... I guess I misinterpreted this.
 
I think anole scenting is one thing, but ending up with a Corn that won't eat anything except anoles, is a different deal. That would be a hard Corn to sell unless you have a buyer who can a) source wild-caught anoles and b) doesn't mind the associated risk of disease etc.

I'd think in most areas, anoles are a pretty expensive food option when compared to mice.
