"arrowhead", or ????

Hi Everyone,

I thoroughly enjoy this forum. I just have, I hope, a quick question. I know that you breed for "color", and in some cases, for "pattern". I haven't seen mention of the "head pattern" though, is that ever a consideration? Is there a "most" desirable?

Thanks!

There are a bunch of different types of head patterns. I dunno that any are more or less desireable, except on bloodreds where people want the most gray possible on them.

Based on what Hurley and I have put together from examining a few clutches, there appear to be some definite inheritance patterns affecting the shape of the head blotch. We've even got a set of terms we use to describe the head blotch shapes.

Personally, I like the "Skull" (like on this anery bloodred http://serpwidgets.com/freepics/posts1203/fhqwhgads_1203_03.jpg) and "Deadbolt" (like on this lavender http://serpwidgets.com/freepics/posts0204/TrancexZammy_0204_02.JPG ) head patterns best. I'm really hoping that the "ringneck" thing seen on some striped and sunkissed corns turns out to be a simple genetic thing. Hopefully we'll know in a few more years. :)

Here's a small clutch collage with a hatchling pic of dad on the upper right and head pic of mom on lower right.

These babies seem to split the difference between dad's clean arrowhead and mom's wider key.

Here's another small clutch with dad in the upper right and mom in the lower right. Sorry for the quality of the pics...thank God we've since gotten a new camera. :p

Serpwidgets and Hurley,
Thanks so much for the information, great links and pics! Great to see several side by side. I kinda figured that the markings were being noticed, I knew about the "skull", but "deadbolt" was a new one on me. Thanks again.

The upper one with the sloppy cropping and pasting I can't remember what I used, the lower one was done very quickly with Paint Shop Pro. This year, I'll get better pics, the camera utilized for those pics was pathetic. :p LOL. I like the new one much better. Now, with the macro lenses and better camera, I should be able to get razor sharp photos with good detail.

I like to follow trends and head patterns just facinate me, so I hope to get good pics of all hatchlings this year along with their parents. It'll be fun to see the results.

edit:

OK, I can't take it. That first set of head shots is embarassing. I put together a new one with the hatchlings I still have from that clutch:

(Mom is in upper right, dad is in lower right)
