Up to now my snake has been on paper. I kept my mice on Pine till I ran out, planning to switch them to aspen because all my research suggests this is better for them. I opened the bag of "Prime Pet" Scent free Aspen, free of scent oils. so it says..
I have never used aspen before, so I don't know what its supposed to smell like, if anything at all. This aspen has an unidentifiable smell.. I at first likened it to Linseed oil, bu the more I think about it the more I think its closer to the smell of fresh cut oak. (Used to cut wood for the farm wood stove as a kid.)
My question to you all is what does your aspen smell like? is there any discernible smell even if you cant describe it? I took the first bag back to the pet store and they exchanged it, but opening the second it smells the same, so I am inclined to believe its normal... I just want to be sure I'm not going to hurt my snake.
In the interim I am baking the bedding at around 200 for an hour, (Weird maybe, but it will dry it assuming I'm right and they just didn't make it from seasoned wood, and or didn't kiln it before packaging.)
