Aspen?

OK, so I'm sorry if you already covered this a hundred times, but I'm new and I've got a question.

People have been telling me that Aspen works as a bedding. I come from a rat background where pine beddings irritate the respiratory system. Why don't they irritate a snake's respiratory system? Is this really OK? :shrugs:

Pine DOES irritate snake's respiratory systems too. Aspen, on the other hand doesn't affect them at all. In fact, I use aspen in my rat's cage too. Most people here will recommend aspen. Along with Cypress mulch, paper towels, and newspaper.

Pine (and red cedar) contain "aromatic" oils, which is the cause of the respiratory problems. Aspen doesn't have this, and thus, is safe for a snake's (and yes, a rat's) respiration.

regards,
jazz

I think it is silly that they still sell pine in the pet trade. I work in a pet store and almost every new small animal owner who has a problem with their animal it is because they are on pine.
In fact I was in a pet store today with my brother and we were looking at the dwarf hamsters and he asked me why they all had their eyes closed, you could tell they were using pine shavings and that the hamsters were allergic.
I recomend aspen to anyone who isnt willing to pay the money for Carefresh.
that being said, Aspen is a really cheap substrate if you want something that looks better than newspaper.

(right that was my 2 cents :p )

Can you use carefresh in a snake tank? I love that stuff!

i agree aspen is cheap i bought a bag that should last me 3 changes in my 20 long.by the way my corn loves it

sheading

i have a question,is it normal for a corn to start to shed then quit then start again.my started two Tuesdays ago quit on Thursday i feed him and when i got up on Friday he had shed and he ate Thursday nite.

I think aspen is pretty messy when you have to clean 14+ cages. And it molds quick when they tip over their water dishes.. i use 'kraft paper'.

What is 'kraft paper'?

Does anyone use carefresh? Would it be OK, because I already buy so much that I should probably own stock in the company. . .

Some of the pet stores in town here use it, I see no reason why not because it is made from paper. I am not sure how it would be to clean up, but your snake would be able to tunnel! lol
I guess its weither you want to spend the money on it!
although some of the colours might look REALLY SHARP!

heres a quick pic of it.. its just as thick as newspaper.. and you can buy it by the rolls like wrapping paper at Dollar Tree.

Howdy!
I use Carefresh Ultra, and I love it. I think the regular kind MIGHT be to dusty. Its great for the little ones, but I noticed that my big heavy adult just mushes it down, and it just doesn't work well for him. I am switching him to papertowels over newsprint, which is easy to spot clean, etc. The smaller snakes really love the Carefresh Ultra though. They burrow and move it around.
About the shedding question - did he have a bad shed?
