attaching uth

i have a question about attaching the uth. I get the concept of attaching to ceramic tile or another piece of glass then putting that on the bottom of you viv. But my question is what methods do you guys use to attach it to the viv. How do you prop it up to press against the bottom, and how do you allow for airflow below the heat pad?

The one I had, a Zoo Med I think, came with paper covering the sticky side of the the UTH, I left that paper on the UTH and then place it to the underside of the tank and duck tape it on. I check it every time I clean the tank and it never came off. I few others have used duck tape aswell.
Using a piece of tile, would seem to me, would make it harder for the heat to work through and harder to regulate. But since I never tried it that way I not sure.

I have had luck attaching my UTH to a piece of glass and then just putting the tank on top of that glass... use the little rubber feet that come with the UTH. Put them on the corners of your tank.

So then you just lay it on whatever piece of furniture the tank is on, i thought it needs to be elevated to allow air to circulate underneath it

I guess if it was expensive furniture you are worried about discoloring... mine is on a metal rack.

Yes it should allow for it to cirulate under the tank.

That's why i was wondering how to attach it to the tank to elevate if you have it affixed to a piece of glass or to a ceramic tiles

Well. use one tile for the UTH. stick that to the bottom and use two or more tiles for each corner of the tank.

I use a piece of glass from a picture frame that I buy at the Dollar store. Then I put the feet under the glass, and put the piece under the tank. The feet on the glass give it some air space, and the glass is thin enough that it allows the heat to go thru the glass bottom of the tank.

All of my UTH have come with little rubber feet once I peel off the adhesive, stick to tank then stick little feet on, that allows for air flow.

I think the OP is wanting to not stick the UTH to his tank and is trying to figure out how to stick it to a piece of glass to put under the tank but leave airflow between the uth and the furniture.

I believe something like this would work... ZooMed UTH's get hot on the bottom too, so this wouldn't be a problem for them. Not sure about others. (The UTH is stuck face down on the glass.)

The tank would likely need some little rubber feet on the corners. The glass the UTH is stuck to for sure does.

I guess I'm a little more ghetto than all of you.

For my corn, the UTH is on a tile, the tile sits on the tabletop (tile side down of course), and the viv sits above the tile with all four corners (of the viv) propped up on pop bottle lids.

Sounds perfect to me! :grin01:

I don't worry about my furniture, I have scorch marks on lots of stuff to prove it! I once made a HUGE square of brown carpet turn green with an UTH. Lucky I never burned the place down I reckon.

Thanks that's exactly what i was looking for

I didnt stick it to my glass. It doenst hurt the coffee table its on at all and still warms the tank. I did make a halfhearted attempt to use those plastic feet to keep it off the coffee table. I think they are gone now.

I've found it more trouble than it's worth to stick them on to the glass, I just place them under it. Also Those little feet are not worth the trouble, they don't stay on very well if you move the viv around ever. Why do you need airflow? You're just wasting heat. Unless airflow is your method of regulating the temperature, in which case a home made rheostate would be much simpler. I suggest the easiest way is to plop the viv down on the heat mat and use a simple dimmer switch to set the power level.
