So I would like to make a natural vivarium for my Everglades Rat Snake. I read as much info as possible, even bought The Book - The Art of Keeping Snakes. But one question still remains...

How do you ensure proper heat on the warm side, soil is not a good heat conductor. Do I set the thermostat to my heat mat a few degrees higher to make sure he is getting the proper temps (he's not much of a burrower), or leave it as is and monitor with a thermometer. Winters coming (Said Ned Stark) and it can get quite cold in my old house.

Any help will be awsome and greatly appreciated

Cheers
Amanda
