I've seen multiple posts and sites that list hatchlings can do just fine in smaller containers. (heck a lot of breeders use small tupperwares/rubbermaids for the first few months. I think so long as you are meeting the other needs, food, water, heat/cool space is the most variable one. Mine is about 2-3 months (I think, I have no clue really) and she's in a 10 gallon atm.

Now I will say, a 5 gallon will be harder to set up a good variable temp because I think the zoomed UTHs are for 10g and up. But there is a similar heating pad made for hermit crab containers that is smaller and might work. You'll just have to play with a thermostat to make sure the temps are right.

While I don't really approve, I've had to temporarily hide an animal once myself so I can understand. If you want it to be out of sight and secure, I'd recommend using a tub with a nice secure lid instead of a tank. I've got a 26.5 qt. Ziploc Weathertight tub for my hatchling that I hope will last the year. UTHs work nicely with tubs, though if you get the kind that adheres, I'd just stick it to a piece of foil.
