Baby Dekay's Brown Snake

I was found by another little snake today. Slithering across my path on the sidewalk, in the same area where I found the smooth green snake. Isn't he the cutest thing? He's actually fit himself through the spaces in my ring, he's so tiny.

I knelt down and put my hand on the ground in front of him, and he just slithered straight into my hand. I held him for a little while, then let him go in some tall grass.

The best thing is that he is obviously a hatchling, which means there must be plenty of snakes on this hill down the street from me. I hope they will continue to thrive there!

That has a perfect 10 "awww" rating! So cute :)

All we have up here is common garter snakes... I haven't seen one in the wild though sine I was a kid.

Looks like a yearling. Storeria are a product of live birth, and are born about as big around as a pencil lead. Cute little bugger.

No biggie, Haley. The first time I ever saw and caught a newborn, in 1979 at my summer job for the National Forest Service, I thought it was a worm. That moved just a little differently. I think it could have coiled up on a dime. Imagine what tiny creatures they must actually feed on.

Fascinating article.

Cool find. I once found an adult crawling across the parking lot of a local grocery store. Very musky smelling.

Nice find! I grew up in Cleveland and those were the only snakes that could be found in the city. We called them DeKay's Snakes. I agree with the person who thinks that's one of last year's babies. Here's an adult I found a couple of years ago:
