today after school i went into my room to play with kaa and i noticed she was in a weird position and in a spot she usually doesnt lay in the tank. i reached in there and she was dead.. im trying to figure out why or how he/she (dont really know, just guessed kaa was a she) died. One reason might have been that she hasnt eaten in about 2 months, but i have heard of snakes going much longer than that with out eating. As i was looking at her i noticed a large black and kinda greenish spot on her stomach, does anybody know what thats from?

kaa was about 16 inches long and was feeding on pinkie mice

thanks, Ollie

While snakes can go a long time without eating, that normally applies to older snakes that are not still on pinkies. A snake that's still on pinkies really shouldn't be going 2 months without eating. Why was the snake not eating?

Btw, the greenish spot on the stomach is the gal bladder leaking when the snake dies, not the cause...

Firstly, I'm very sorry for your loss mate. :(

Not eating for 2 months is achievable at adulthood/sub-adulthood, but at that size it's asking a lot of her young body. Really, after she had stopped eating you should have stopped handling. What did you do to try to get her to eat again? Try not to blame yourself too much though, some snakes (and all animals) just weren't meant for this World, it's sad I know, but that's nature unfortunately :(

That large spot is usually normal, and isn't the cause of death, it's the result of it. It's the discharge from organs such as the gall bladder. However, sometimes it can be more sinister, such as a burn mark or the result of crypto (a protozoan parasite). But considering the facts, we already know the cause of death, so I assume that the mark is just the discharge.

Once again, I'm sorry for your loss.

All the best

David

i tried alot of different things, i tried braining, cutting the pink length wise, live pinkies, scenting with anole, scenting with chicken broth..

Sounds like you went about the right way, maybe after a month/month and a half you should have tried force feeding. How long did you leave between each refusal and did you continue to handle?

i usually waited about a week between each refusal, and during the first month i didnt handle as much because i had hockey untill 7:30 every night but after the first month i started handling.
