Barrs Cages?

Hi all, Im looking into ordering an enclosure for a young cornsnake I will be adopting from a friend (who breeds her pair each year) And I am curious about Barrs cages and what size would be best. When I talk to people about sizes, most talk in gallons or liters and such, and not really dimension wise.

So I wanted some advice on ordering something online. I'll be going back to school in a week, and so I cant buy it here (since I will be flying back with WAY too many xmas presents already)

Im looking into something like this, would this be adequate once the corn reaches full size? http://www.herpcages.com/test/241212t.html

Basically...can someone send me a link from a site that has quality enclosures, and suggest a size that would last until maturity, seeing as I dont see a point to but a larger one later on... Thanks!

I have 2 Barr's cages of that dimension with the top vent, and I can't say enough about them. They're amazing quality for an awesome price.

Follow the link below for a full dissertation after receiving them:

I got the 24 x 12 x 12 cages mostly just to test them out before deciding if I want to buy more. Now that I've established that I do want more, I would only recommend the 24 x 12 x 12 cages for younger snakes.

The two adult females pictured in my post, are most definitely not comfortable in there. They just seem cramped to me. So if you're going to just keep the one snake in one cage its entire life, I'd spend a bit more and get the 36 x 12 x 12 or larger cage. Something you won't have to upgrade, ever. Sure they can live in a smaller cage, but wouldn't they be more comfy in a bigger one?

The 24 x 12 x 12 is a tad larger than a typical 10 gallon fish tank just to give you an idea of how big it is.

Other than that, I'd highly recommend them. =)

Well I think if I decide to order from the site, I might just get the 24" for now, seeing as I didnt want to spend $100 right off the bat, but it would probablyy save me money, if I had the money at the moment. Maybe by the time Im in need of a larger viv I will be wanting another snake anyways, and just upgrade then.

Im falling in love with them already, they're just too darn pretty! =) There are some great customer pictures too.

I recently purchased two of the 24x12x12 tanks with 2 sets of spacers. I am in love with them completely! When I recieved my packages, I could not believe how light they were. What was even better was when I opened them up. I found a little thank you card from Barrs along with a copy of my reciepts. I pulled out the tanks and found that I needed to tighten down the screws for the top vent, but that was really easy to do. I then pulled off both of the clear plastic scratch guards off of the clear plexi glass and the UTH's on them, and they were ready to go! SO EASY!!! I would definatly recomend them. Heck, I am even making improvements to mine! I will post pics once as it is all up and finished.

Thanks for the post! I emailed them tonight to ask about availabilty and shipping cost (as the website informs to do, hehe) hopefully I hear from them soon, so I can order and have it shipped to me before my darling arrives. If not the new babe might have to deal with a not so fun cheapy critter keeper til her mansion arrives. hehe Of course I will make it as comfy as possible, and she's only 6inches long right now, so just a tiny little thang.

Post pics as soon as you can, I love their vivs....they remind me of my computer case. lol I've got a window on one side of my cpu, with neon lights, and wiring that lights up (waste of money, but soooo fun) We can be twiners! haha

I have a 4x1.5x1.5 vivarium and this houses both my adult corn snake comfortably. A good guide for an about corn is a viv in which the longest side is 2/3 the length of your snake. If the enclosure is too big the snake will feel unconfortable. Snakes like a secure environment with lots of hiding places. It sounds like you have been given good advice and its good to see that you are looking into what is best for youre snakes before getting them. Congratulations on youre new additions, in sure soon you will be addicted like the rest of us!!

i agree with Vicki, 48 by 18 by 18 is ideal for 1 or 2 adult corns. But for a small snake like yours 18inch squuared or 24/12/12 is a much better bet till it reaches 30 inches plus.

Well I put in my order tonight, after I got the email from Doug Barr about shipping price and availability. It will be a wonderful viv until Torque gets bigger. Now to find out if it arrives before Torque does =S lol If not, I will put something together in the mean time.

I had a question about lighting and heat pads though. I planned to use a heating pad under the viv, but wanted to know your thoughts about lighting, and if I DO just use a heating pad, is it ok if I want to still put a light on the cage, just for visabilities sake?

The cages are perfect for the fluorescent under-the-cabinet lights you can get at Walmart or most hardware stores for under $10. I just popped in a full-spectrum bulb to perk up the natural colors in the bedding, furniture and snake for an added $7.

I believe they make some under cabinet lights small enough that you can get them to go over just the screen on top. I just had a couple of 24" lights already on hand, and just used them.

I think a UTH and a regular incandescent bulb would be too much heat and drying out for such a viv. So I would opt for the heatpad under one end of the viv and the light across the top, as it creates virtually no downward heat.

Thats what I was thinking, I didnt want to use a lamp as a heating source, more just to make the viv visually more appealing. So a long office type bulb like that wouldnt put off too much heat if I already had a heating pad in place?

Nope. Most of the heat generated by the under cabinet lights are restricted to where the ballast and other electronic gadgets are confined to in one spot. And if placed on top of the cage, 99% of the heat will rise up and away from the cage.

The heat isn't that much either, you can easily grab the hottest part of the lamp unit and hold it comfortably.

Well thats good to know, I will be picking one up when I set everything up. Sheesh when I get back to Utah, I've got sooo much to do. Besides going to school, buying books, unpacking all the gifts I've got....I've got a snake viv to set up! lol busy busy busy

better to build a viv yourself

i took and welded some aluminum angle together. took 4 sheets of glass set in place with 100% silicone . made a wooden top out of 1x2 and 1x3 stapled my screen to it and now i have a 3 foot 4 inches square and 17 inches tall tank for my 39 inch snow corn named Mr. Lee. for bedding i have aspen chip and his hide box is well hidden underneath all them chips in a corner and 1 flukers 60 watt dayglo bulb. also have a sunken ship which really belongs in a 200 gallon fish tank but the snake liked it so much i let him have it . he looks pretty cool slithering around on that dark wood him being a snow .can e-mail pics if interested in the idea or just want to see 1 biga$$ snake tank.

Just make sure all lights are coverd with either plastic or mesh to stop the snake burning itself on them! :crazy02:

IIRC, it only took them a day or so to reply. Then again I ordered in an off-season, they may simply be swamped right now.

Drop them another e-mail, and if still not having heard back, give them a call. People are only as hard to get ahold of as you want them to be. ;)

they look really nice :) but does anyone have pics of any of these:
36x12x12
36x24x12
48x24x12
or should i just email them and ask?
