Bath Time:

I would like to give both my girls a nice bath and I'm wondering how you "experts" do that? Am I limited to just warm water?

Nicole

The little devil on my shoulder is picturing a snakey bubble bath (no, don't do that).

As far as I know warm water is it. Remember, there is a good chance your snake will take a drink. There is another good chance your snake will poop.

Rufus bathes himself from time to time. He crawls into his water dish and soaks for a few minutes maybe once or twice a month. (When I was a kid my mom would have killed me if I only bathed once a month). The water in his dish is usually "Room Temperature" (69 to 74) and he doesn't seem to mind it.

But if I'm bathing him myself, I do give him warm water. Not hot, not at warm as I would bathe in, but you know, warm to the touch.

But a word of warning - Warm water almost always makes Rufus Poop. He will crap right there in his bath water. And I know a lot of snake owners will give a warm water bath to their snakes if and when they are constipated. (The snakes -not the owners. LOL)

I've also heard it's safe and ok to use a very small amount of Johnsons Baby "No More Tears" Shampoo in the bath water. It's non toxic and won't hurt the snake. Although I have never done this, I just use warm water.

I don't know if you guys remember but when I first rescued Tessa I noticed she had a heck of a moldy smell to her. Now three sheds later she still smells slightly though not as bad but bad enough so I want to give her a bath!! She just pooped so maybe this is the best time to do it!! I've never seen either of my girls soak in their water dishes but maybe they are doing midnight skinny dipping

Yeah there are a lot of things unseen in the viv after dark. I hear things sometimes and see tunnels in the aspen, find spilled water, etc. Lots of circumstantial evidence, lol.

Am I limited to just warm water?

I'm not sure I'd say "limited", but yes, you should only be using water unless there is a need to treat for mites or it's the first bath at home...or if there's a significant need to clean him (covered in poop, stinky in general, etc). The water needs to barely feel warm to you...keep in mind your body temp is 98.6 and a snake is the temp of his enclosure (typically mid 80s). If you bathe him in water that feels warm to you, the water is going to be close to 98.6 and that is significantly warmer than he is. If you're worried about a stink that the snake has or you're treating for mites or you are bathing for the first time, you can use Dawn dish soap - the more "eco friendly" the better. Just enough to make the water start to bubble a bit, not a lot.

Ok I havnt done it yet because I didn't want to stress her out right before feeding day so I'm gonna wait a couple days but the only real reason I'm bothering to do it is because of the mold smell she had had since I rescued her!! I thought a few sheds would take care of it but she's shed 3 times and still stinks!!
