Bedding question (I'm a newbie)

RedRaydin

Jason DeFreitas
My corn snake (Raydin) a candy cane had used aspen bedding for the first 2 weeks I had him. I then discovered astroturf and laid that down in half his cage and the other half i keep aspen with his hiding spot so he can still burrow when he likes. He has eaten twice since Sept 18 when I first got him and is due to eat again tommorrow. I feed him pinkies still, almost graduating to fuzzies. Anywayz, he has used the bathroom on the astroturf twice and I am planning on cleaning it tommorrow before feeding time. Yes I do feed him in the cage but he eats over by the astroturf where I put the pinkie so as not to get aspen caught in his mouth. My question is I heard that astroturf is bad because it can have bacteria build up and is hard to clean. I know snakes carry salmonella and I always wash my hands after holding and cleaning but is this turf harmful to the snake or me if it is being cleaned regularly? He seems to like the turf just fine and he had his first shedding two days ago and everything came off in one piece on the turf so I imagine the turf helped it come off better as well. I am inexperienced though so I am asking for help here. My gf used to have two boas and also used turf and said it was fine. Can you guys get me some answers on this? Thank you.

Jason

I've never used the turf myself, but it would seem to me that keeping it clean should limit or prevent any potential problems. But regular cleaning would be the key. If you don't already, it would probably be easiest to have two or three pieces so you can swap them and spend more time cleaning them more thoroughly.

I do rotate two pieces currently and do not plan on getting more because when one comes out I clean it and at the next cleaning replace it with the freshly washed one. I appreciate the response. Do have to keep his living quarters tidy. Here are some pics of the young one. Got him Sept 18th.

The last two pics he is very faded only because he would shed just two days later. Hes so cool and the color is awesome. Can anyone verify this is a candy cane? I'm pretty sure. If it's not I guess it may be one of those amel ones. I'm not good with the terminology yet for the different kinds (don't have them memorized).
