That's more or less what we did except in the kitchen sink with the window open and the exhaust fan blowing. :D

mouse factory

:) The last couple of frozen mouse orders we had came form the mouse factory. THe best thing about them is that I ordered my mice and less than 24 hours later they were at my house. SO they get my recommendation. ANd they send lots of dry ice for fun too!

That was what surprised me about BCRF. I called to place my order around lunch time Tuesday, and the rats were here Thursday. I expected to have to wait a week or so.

They must keep some stock on hand where Rodentpro we know to harvest and freeze to order. I see the benefits of RP doing it for freshness but if the other place is only keeping stock on hand for a few days before shipping out then it's not a problem and more efficient in regards to getting them to you quick. The only issue on there end is that they need more freezers but that won't affect customers, just their bottom line.

I was just curious, but for those of you who DO order rodents from these companies, do you have multiple snakes, or do some of you just have one? I am uncertain about feed availabilty in my area, but am 'adopting' a cornsnake from a friend who has just had a batch from her breeding pair. I first thought about breeding my own mice, seeing as ordering and shipping mice may not be cost effective.

Anyone have any opinions on what would be the best option for me?
Oh, he or she will be quite young, only a few weeks, so I'll be starting off with pinkies.

-day

My only real concern is I wont be ordering enough mice to make the shipping cost worth it. I went to the BCRF website and shipping was $24 at least.....I dunno, does anyone have any thoughts about buying a few mice (2-3 females, 1 male) and breeding myself??

The main concern most people have when breeding their own mice is the smell. Male mice smell pretty bad. You can minimize the odor by cleaning the tank 2-3 times a week, however. That's pretty easily done with just one colony of mice. The other thing is availability...the mice have babies about every 21 days or so. It may take longer to get them producing initially, though. You may still end up buying a few pinks from a pet store in order to feed your snake until you are able to put a few pinks in the freezer.

I only have 2 snakes right now. It is difficult to buy for hatchling and juveniles when you only have a few. I am unable to take advantage of quantity pricing and have to make a guess as to the growth of my animals. The savings are worth the small gamble to me though. Pinkies/fuzzies are about $1.41 around here. I payed $.93 for rat pinkies buying 50 at a time on line.

Terri,
How long do baby mice take to grow to medium/large in captivity?
I am thinking about starting a couple colonies this year...but it will mostly be for bigger mice...I can get pinkies for a quarter a piece...and fuzzies for 30 cents...so I am not so worried about the smaller ones...but when I have 30 adults eating 2 large mice a week...it is going to get rather expensive.

Derek,

I have never actually monitored how long it takes for them to reach adult size. I would estimate that under the right conditions (with good, high-lactating mothers) they should be getting to a decent size in about 4-5 weeks. They may not be "jumbo-sized" by then, but they should be a decent size.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, please. I know there has to be someone on this forum that has actually kept track of the growth cycle of a mouse

Seems like I read that it takes a bit over 20 days for a mouse to reach sexual maturity. If that is true, then Terri, you are right on the money in my book.

Thanks both of you...
I will be in need of breeding colonies sometime by fall...and I need to plan how many breeders I need to subsidize my consumption...
Don't want TOO many...but definitely want enough.

Got my first Rodentpro order today......

Communcation sent instantly at every step. Was shipped and recieved exactly as stated. Packed expertly in dry ice and all peices frozen solid. All ordered items included, nothing missed. All bags were labeled. 100% professional seller and shipper, will continue to do business with them and would recommend to anyone.
Hi everyone.
I've seen a few people mention the labeling of the bags. What sort of info do you want to see on the label? The size? Date frozen? Just curious. Thanks.

Direct quote from this page linked above!

"Your rodents are not processed until your order is placed. This ensures that your order is fresh."

And RodentPro doesn't vacuum seal!

I've never documented either but that to me seems pretty accurate, Terri. Maybe a little longer...6 weeks for an adult of adult size? I've got around 15 little girls right now, that I weaned around 3 weeks and they have been on their own for 2 weeks. They still seem kind of small to me. Couple more weeks and they'll be setup in the rack and soon become momma's too!

To me "Jumbo's" means retired breeders, to which they are always larger than adult mice that haven't been bred.

Right on...thanks for the info Pat...

I just want to be prepared as far in advanced as possible...

After buying a fairly hefty supply of frozen mice last weekend (From Classic Dum's...they may just BE Big Cheese like you suggested...and they are really quality mice...vaccuum sealed (except for the hoppers) and CLEAN!!) I realized how much they will cost me once I have 20 snakes eating 2 adult mice a week...My kids might have to go on a diet...or I will have to give up a meal a day...LOL. :shrugs:

I just want to be able to start them far enough in advance to have a good colony RUNNING.

No problem Derek. I have learned most of what I know about them, through a lot of trial and error. As you know, there just isn't much on the web about breeding mice and/or rats as a food source!

If you have any questions or if I can help you out in any way, just drop me a line, bro. You know how to find me!

anyone know if there's a place that allows online ordering with CC AND vacuum seals their orders?

BCRF is awesome but I hate the phone...
