Best way to transfer between feeding a home tanks?

Mr.AJ

Educated Horse.
Hey guys, just got a baby corn snake - my girlfriend has named 'Chompy' (After his first feeding we found this a highly suited name for him!)

Considering we only purchased him yesterday, we left him for a day to settle in then fed like the pet shop recommended. He took to the food straight away, as soon as i held his head near the feeding tub he crawled in and set about the pinky. Howeever, it turns out after eating he becomes VERY aggressive... The entire time he was in his feeding tub he was coiled into an S shape watching my every move across the room... I didnt want to pick him up and risk him regurgitating (As he was obviously unhappy with my presence) so i left him in the feeding tub on the heatmat for 10minutes.. Then it became apparent i wasn't going to be able to open one corner and let him slither out on his own as he just wouldnt stop staring at my fingers while holding the tub. In the end i settled for taking his hiding spot out (To make room for the tub) and leaving him in his tank until he decided to get out. This worked fine, until it came time to remove the tub and put his hide back in.

He was not happy in the slightest at my intrusion, he sat for the next 5 or 10 minutes right at the front of the tank coiled up staring at me.. then enventually decided to slink off into his hide (But even then, wouldnt stop looking at me he coiled around the inside so his head was still poking out!) 20 minutes later hes only just decided to stop watching me.

I guess it could just be the stress of a new home, then being fed so soon.. OR he could just be a snake whos very aggressive after eating.

Just wondering what the best way to get him out of his feeding tub after a meal is.. should i just keep going for the placing the tub in the tank and leaving him to it route?

I suppose the good thing is we know hes a good feeder! No hesitation, as soon as he was in he was latched onto the pinkie.

First of all, congratulations on getting your first Corn!

Now, a general rule amongst hobbyists is to leave the snake alone for about 5 days after they've been moved to a new home. However, like yours, some snakes are stimulated by the journey home as it swirls all their gastric juices around, so don't be too worried about feeding him too soon.

Don't worry, I doubt your snake is aggressive, very few Corns are. There are two reasons for him taking up the defensive posture in this case:

1. He's a hatchling, and tiny. You're a big ol' human, the size of a skyscraper compared to him (no offense lol). So think about it from his perspective, it's not aggression, simply fear (he will come to realise that you're not a threat in time).

2. He's just eaten. Snakes feel at their most vulnerable after they've just eaten and whilst they're digesting. Their movement slows and they don't really feel like doing anything except finding a nice warm place. So I wouldn't be worried about the defensive posture. If he does bite you, continue to handle him (in normal circumstances I mean). This shows that his displays can't hurt or distract you. Oh and I don't know if you have been bitten, but if not, let me tell you: It doesn't hurt at all. If you don't notice it, you won't feel it. HONESTLY.

Hope that helps mate

David

Also to add don't fear the bite corns bark is worse then their bite i guess you could say. A hatchling like yours won't even break the skin. I usually open the lid of the feed tub and lower it into the tank and sometimes have to give it a little shake but they tend to get the point and crawl out of it. You can pick him up and lower him in but I think the tub method is the best!

unbelievable that he got that mouse down.

Whys that?.

Its less than 1.5x his width, Just at an awkward angle when i took the photo. He rotated it a bit before swallowing. At first he was clamped on directly sideways.

Cute little boy, btw. And I do love his name.

I normally just ignore it when they're grumpy (and trust me, I have a VERY grumpy one). If he bites, you'll probably just feel like he tapped you. lol Ignore him, laugh it off, keep doing what you need to be doing, and eventually he'll figure out that you're not going to eat him.

Thanks, My girlfriend demanded we call him that.

Does seem to suit him quite well though, Just handled him properly for the first time since getting him (With the exception of picking him up to put him in his feeding tub) He was quite hissy fitty at first, Struck out a few times but i think he only made contact once!. After him crawling through my fingers for a few minutes he settled down and decided i wasnt going to eat him, So instead he was going to eat me!. Plucky little bugger decided to constrict two of my fingers then tried to chomp on down on one... Just left him to it (Kind of tickled!) eventually he got bored and let go. :)
