I'm a 6th grade teacher and yesterday was the first day of the new school year. As a way of introducing myself to my students I always take some things in that tell them something about me. Well I took my boa and one of my ball pythons to show them. After we got the usual shrieks and shivers out of the way I answered their questions. Of course someone asked if they bite. I spent a good 5 minutes talking about how calm and well behaved my snakes are. How they have never bitten anyone, the oldest is almost 4 years old. Talked about being smart about how you handle them and avoiding situations that might get you bit. They all enjoyed it a lot.

Well, after all that talk about them not being biters, what happens? Yep, last night my 10 year old daughter is helping me clean the corn hatchling bins out. She is holding her hypo okeetee while I replace the paper and suddenly she screams and starts crying hysterically. I look up to see her gently putting the snake on the table, I chased it down before it ran away, and between the sobs she shows me her hand with 4 neat little bloody puncture wounds. I was incredibly impressed that she didn't throw the little thing across the room, she showed great composure. After I finally got her calmed down she admitted that it hadn't hurt all that badly, but had scared the crap out of her.

All my fault, I just had to go and brag to my students. Maybe I should have knocked on wood or rubbed a rabbits foot or something. :)

Wow, good story; I guess you've probably learned your lesson now---corn snake hatchlings can bite! When I go through all of my hatchlings to feed them, I can usually count on getting bit at least once from some of them. It seems to me like some entire clutches can all be very agressive. It does take time to get used to though...

Awwww...poor kid! You're right, though, must kids would've sent the snake flying. Is she ok with everything now? I hope this doesn't make her leary in the future, although she's probably old enough and smart enough to know that ALL animals can be unpredictable at times.

That's always the way things go, Darin...I swear I jinx myself all the time. Just 2 weeks ago I was mentioning to my sister how after 13 years of driving I've never hit anyone, let alone get a parking ticket. Guess what happened the next day? You guessed it, I tapped someone from behind and scuffed the bumper all up! Felt like the biggest heel in the world! I think someone was trying to tell me something! I guess some things are better left unsaid sometimes!

Anyway, kiss daughters boo-boo and let her know everything's allright! ;)
