biting

i just had my new baby corn snake out for the first time. she seemed ok at first but then bit my little sister. is there a reason for this or is it just because it was her first time of being handled?

The snake probably got stressed by being handled by different people.

This is only my personal preference, but i would recommend that to start off with only you handle the snake, until it's calmed down a little.

if shes a baby, then no harm done to your sister right ;)
the snake probably hurt its-self more than it hurt her :p

well my sister screamed started crying and droped my snake and ran off so that probably taught my snake a lesson!!
Yeah, it probably taught the snake that a bite is the best way to gain freedom from a giant tormentor. ;) Also, if someone dropped one of my snakes, they'd never be allowed near one of mine again. I hope you can handle a bite without risking injury to the snake. I've been bitten by cats/kittens, dogs/puppies, guinea pigs, ferrets, gerbils, hamsters, mice, and corn snakes of varying sizes. Guess which hurt the least, and caused the least injury? :)

Hah! I guess you have some experience with this. My top ten worse bites have all been from ferrets. There's nothing like having blood streaming down your arm while a 3lb ferret hangs off your finger, with top and bottom canines securely penetrating a finger bone.

(But they are the cutest baby animals. :) )

Which is why I don't hold the ferret and got rid of the ?!%$?!& dwarf hampsters.
Back to the snake I let a child hold my older snake once after repeated warning about looking at the snake face to face it struck, luckily it did not connect. That was the last time a child held any of my snakes. :grin01: susan

my sister is only small so the snake didnt get dropped far... i will be able to handle the bites and im going to be her only handler 4 a while

But the same bite on a toe while sleeping is worse.... One time my big shepherd came up and sniffed the ferret and it latched onto the dogs nose. Chasing a 100+ lb yellping dog with a ferret hanging from its nose around the house was quite comical, until the toe incident. Needles to say, the dog would avoid the ferret at all costs after that....

Poor dog, but I laughed at the mental image.

My worst bite was in a pet shop from an African Gray Parrot. Got the tip of his beak between my thumb nail and cuticle; man did that hurt! If you get a mouse latch on it's no big deal to fling it, costs you $1.29, but a bird that costs $999.99 you just gotta grin and bear it!

Do animals hate you that you have been bite by every type?:roflmao::dancer:

Snake bites should be VERY rare, so I wouldn't worry about "getting used to it". I've only been bitten by a snake three times, and neither time by a corn. The first time was early on when I was stupid enough to try and hand feed a garter. He didn't mean to bite me, he was going for the food. The second time a spunky king girl who was nervous. She barely bit. The time third was another feeding incident, this time with a king. It was when I was going to put him into the feeding bin. He got all excited and clipped me, and then himself. He does bite himself once almost every feeding. He is so food-aggressive. Poor thing.
The thing is, corns aren't usually aggressive, but they can get scared or defensive. I have heard of other incidents of when someone handed their snake to someone else, and the snake bit the new person. Those sound like the snake became scared because the situation was unfamiliar.

I think young corns are far more prone to bite. All my snakes get handled by children and have never, ever offered to bite and the kids haul them around everywhere. I supervise them of course and don't allow rough handling, but I've never worried about any of them taking a chomp or I wouldn't allow them to hold them.
