Black light

Ok,

So my red bulb finally burned out and I have a few black light bulbs. They are just regular black bulbs. Can I use them? I read somewhere that they are not good for snakes.

I looked EVERYWHERE for an answer to this prior to getting my snake and I got conflicting opinions each time. The only thing I can tell you is that I only turn mine on for the look (i.e. not for heat or anything else that's necessary). If my snake happens to be out, he always goes in his hide when I turn the black light on. He never does this with any of the other lights near his viv. But then again, I've only had him for a week or so....so he may just be shy.

This topic came up in the chat room the same night you posted it. CAV says that black lights are bad for snakes but he didn't really elaborate on why... I told him about your post and he said he'd come and find it so you'd have a definitive answer, but I guess he never did. You could PM him or something maybe?

Jeff,

I heard somewhere that they were bad for the snakes with some causing convulsions in certain cases. It's no big deal really. I just had them laying around the house. I just use a regular light bulb during the day and leave the viv pitch black at night. Thanks again Jeff...
