well the first snake is a yellow x corn so it's already a hybrid. Adding black rat to it would be... kind of messing up the genes of the snakes a bit more.

You can do it, I believe, just make sure to sell the babies correctly (saying they're corn x yellow x black rat)

i think he means the color of the snake... like "Red and Yellow". more than likely a Normal (or classic, if you prefer) corn.

yes i was refering to a normal corn snake it male and i may in the next year or so breed it with a black rat but im still not sure about it

To be honest, I don't think you should breed it. From what you have written in this thread I don't think you have enough experience to breed, yet.
If I were you, I'd wait a couple years, and in the mean time read A LOT on corn snake husbandry and breeding. When you feel you are ready you can breed.

I also think it would be a better idea that when you do breed, you breed it to another corn snake. I'm not sure what the market on hybrids is, but you will have better luck selling pure corns.

thanks alot guys im not the one actually doing the breeding my uncle is a herbatologist and wanted to do it i was only asking if this was a good idea

honestly, if he was a "HERPatologist" then he would already know if it was a good idea or not. "snakesrule1234" gives you the best advice on this thread so far. good luck in the future.

well as a little up date my corn is doing well and i desided to just get another corn insteade of cross breeding and iv been reading alot more since i posted this and figured i could get another corn grow them both for like 3 more years and then try my hand at breeding and i do have alittle experince with reptile eggs i helped a cousin incubate turtle eggs once

Good idea! I hope you will keep male and female separated? If not, you get eggs when the female isnt ready and then she may die. Oh, and a BIG tip: If you learn how to write it is a lot more easier for us to read.

There is a local pet store here where I live that has a pair of these(black rat x normal corn). They are cohabbing!!! Anyway, I asked to hold one and the girl wouldn't take it out for me, she said that they were really mean. Is this common because of the black rat or is this has more to do with lack of handling and maybe feeding them inside their vivarium. I imagine that cohabbing is causing some stress as well. Anyway, they are a beautiful, dark brown color. They want $65 for them. They haven't even sexed them yet. I feel sorry for them. Anyway, I digress. I was wondering if anyone else had experience with these and what their behavior was like. Thanks.

They co-hab because it's only temporary, until they sell the snakes, also, they sell the snakes before sexually maturity so there is no chance of the female become egg bound (if they are a decent pet store at all!!)

Tania is right, if you co-hab them you put them at all sort of risks, the most likely being the female breeding too young and dying. The worst being they eat each other. Snakes are not social creatures, they probably are stressed.

Also, the two black rat's I have met have been sweet hearts. While some behavior can generalized based on species, it really comes down to the individual snake. If you want a nice pet, just make sure you find a nice black rat before you buy one. I wouldn't get the "mean" one from the pet store (well, I might because I like mean snakes, but I'm guessing you don't, lol)

My advice is to wait, there are so many more snakes out there than what you see in the pet store and fall in love with on any give day. Hang around here, look into a lot of different species, pick one that suits you and start preparing to purchase one. Why just stick with colubrids? Spotted pythons are nice and so are rosy boas. Variation in a collection keeps things from getting boring.

And don't be afraid to sit back and read/edit your post before hitting that "submit" button, fixing the grammar up will go a long way in getting people to take you more seriously.

yea i bought my corn from the local pet store and now i regret it not because my snake is in bad condition he's been great but just because they had 4 corns in one small mabie 4 gal. viv at the pet store if a few months ago i wouldve known better i would of went to a breeder but my snake turned out fine and i am looking into new species of snakes also iv been throwing around the idea of a ball python also been looking into leopard geckos
