Black spots on belly?

Reptilia

New member
Our corn is a caramel motley, and we noticed today that she has some tiny black spots on her belly. They aren't moving and I checked her tank for bugs but found none. She also has a few tiny scales that are darker brown on her tail and towards her head. Anyone encounter this issue? We were thinking of just waiting till her next shed (which should start within the next week) to see if she improves, but if anyone knows this to be a major issue then I'll bring her to the vet this week. Thanks for any info :)

black spots on belly... pics!

here are some pics. i decided to treat for mites just incase, since about 3 weeks ago i replaced her substrate with a new one, so im thinking maybe i got a batch that had them? i don't know :( so i got rid of all her old substrate, vaccuumed the tank, washed it, washed all her hides/decor, soaked her for a bit, and sprayed her and the tank/hides/decor with the mite killer stuff. so hopefully it helps. i have some pictures here, maybe it will help so you guys can confirm? in addition to the black specks on her belly, she also has a few scales that look a little darker than the rest of them. it's only one or two sparingly, hear her head or tail, but she was squirmy so i couldn't get a good picture of that.

:awcrap:

Well after that....did you find any mites.

I'm guessing no. Because that dosen't look like mites but more like a stain or dirt in the scales.

What type of substrate are you using now!!

thanks lenny, i love her too. she's sweet, never grouchy, and so pretty :)

i didn't see any mites, but i wasn't sure what those black spots were, so i didn't want to assume that what i was seeing weren't mites. i had her on the loose coconut fiber (eco earth) then recently changed it over to repitbark (both from zoomed) because none of the stores around here had ecoearth in stock. after changing the substrate is when i noticed the spots, which definitely weren't there before. so i just changed her back to the eco earth.

either way, there was no harm in giving her tank a thorough cleaning anyway, but hopefully it will go away. she's due to have a shed soon so i might have more answers afterwards. any other ideas/suggestions?

It's dirt from the ecoearth, lol not mites at all. Give her a bath in 75-80 degree water and replace with aspen. The ecoearth may cause scale rot since it's damp and corns don't thrive in such a wet environment:)

she started with ecoearth and switch to repitbark.

But aspen is the route I would go.

good to know :) i liked the eco earth because she could burrow easily and it's usually dry, but we can moisten it as little or as much as we want, which is nice when she is shedding. but i'll switch over to aspen if that's what is recommended. thanks for the help! /love

As a side note to your last post..

I only mist/humid hide when there is a problem sheding. Because of my fear of scale rot.

Enjoy

yeah i had the eco earth, then the reptibark, now back to eco earth as of today. scale rot is scary stuff. i only up the humidity when she's shedding because i'd rather her not have a problem shedding to begin with. ;)
