k ive got a breeder rat and she gave birth 3 weeks ago and doing great nursing. got in the tub today and she was bleeding from here woohoo (uno) lol
not alot but there is some residual blood down there and about 8 or nine spots in the tub. now sign of a woond it looks as if its coming from the inside. is this normal, this is my first litter of rats. never seen it with any of my mice or ASF's.

thanks

Eric

Idk if rats do this or not, but since it's a mammal I would assume it's menstruating (sp?)...you know having it's period. But I"m really not sure.

my wife and i was talking about it last night when we found it, and that was exactly almost to a T, what my wife said. I laughed, then thought hell I guess its possable, never seen it on my mice, but even after having 15 pups you sometime dont see any signs of birth in there ( such a tiny amount of blood). so i guess its possable But have no clue. hhmmmmmmmm.

thanks

Eric

They go into heat, but I don't know if they actually menstruate. Did you keep the male in with her? If you did, and its been 3 weeks already, she me be almost ready to have her 2nd litter. Sometimes they can bleed a week before they give birth. I've also noticed that females first few times having pups can bleed more than more experienced females that have had more litters.

ya the male has been with them the whole time but I dont think she preg again she doesnt lookit. i checked her this morning and she still has some blood showing. shes not bleeding like a cut, ( blood running out it more spots on the bedding and around her opening. the menstrating would be a good description of what the bleeding looks like.

thanks

Eric

No it is not normal and No it is not menstrual blood. Rats do not discharge menstrual blood like humans do. It is normal to see a small amount of blood during the birthing process. Bleeding at this late date would indicate some kind of internal damage or problem. Possibly an infection or a tumor. If this rat is important to you, you need to take her to a vet. Or to one of your snakes.

wow should i wait to see if it stops or not. she just started this late last night, she is not swollen or preg looking, shes not acting any different and i cant see anything apearent. she doesnt seem to be in any pain or uncomfortable. thanks wade for the info.

All mammals have placental pregnancies. But some mammals (humans) have a menstrual cycle and some have an estrus cycle. The main difference is that animals that menstruate shed the endometrium if conception does not occur during that cycle. Animals with an estrus cycle reabsorb the endometrium. Another difference is animals that have an estrus cycle only breed during estrus, or when they are in heat. Rats have an estrus cycle.

As to what you should do is up to you. It is not normal for your rat to be bleeding from the vagina. I would think it is probably something serious. It certainly would be for a human if they were bleeding at a time when they shouldn’t be. I personally would not take a $10 rat to the vet for a $60 visit. But then my rats are snake food and not pets.

I don’t know what you could do for the rat on your own. I guess you can just wait and see what happens. Sorry I don’t have a better answer.

thanks for the info wade. my rats are for snake food as well and they will not go to the vet eather. she is just a good mother and a great breeder and hate to part with her just for that reason. i have other females that i will replace her with and call my buddy to feed his Burm. thanks for all the help.

Is the rat a real young one?

Sometimes you get prolapsed uteri in younger rodents.... Is there anything hanging out of the woohoo? If so it is probably a prolapse. If it is a prolapse, best feed her off there is nothing that can be done, she will slowly bleed out. This also happens a lot when very young mice give birth.

If nothing is hanging out then I have no clue what it might be. But as Wade put it best to feed her off than have her suffer and/or a large vet bill.

ya sorry been a few day since i been on here. the day or two aftervi asked this question she stopped bleeding and looks and acts fine. im wondering if one of the pups bit her nursing or somthing. idk im continuing to moniter her a few times a day. thatnks for all everyones help.

Glad to here she doing better. A good breeder rodent sometimes can be hard to replace. I would intrested to see if she has another litter.
