Bloodred fertility??

Rachel

Vet nurse in training!
I just emailed a UK based breeder enquiring about any Bloodred stock he might have. I got an email back saying that he didn't stock them due to them being 'virtually infertile'. Is this true? I mean they can't be all that bad if people are producing them  Maybe it's the UK strain of Bloods, just wanted to get a few opinions.

Cheers,
Rach x

I have not heard of any fertility problems with this strain, mine produce very well. Maybe the person confused the feeding problem they are known for, with a fertility problem. By the way the feeding problem (hatchlings refusing to eat anything but Anoles) is not as prevalent as it once was.

I think that McEachern's General Care and Maintenance of Corn Snakes said that there was a fertility problem in blood reds from extreme inbreeding. That booklet is around ten years old now, and there has been a lot of outbreeding in those years. My impression is that the outbreeding has pretty well fixed the fertility problems. This is all hearsay, though.

It may be true as we have such a small gene pool in this country and most of the bloodred stock have been here for many years without much new blood coming in.

As it typical in many instances of this nature, some people will make broad based claims that stem from an extremely small statistical sampling of data. Usually they have a single pair of a type of animal, and leap to the conclusion that ALL individuals of this cultivar will exhibit the idential characteristics of that single pair and the experience they have with it. This happens VERY frequently.

No, there are no fertility problems that I am aware of specifically in the Blood Red lines. But ANY individual of ANY cultivar can potentially have a fertility problem, just as it is in human beings and other types of animals.

IMHO, of course.

Thanks for clearing that up guys. I wasn't sure if it was a sweeping claim from little evidence or not, or if maybe the UK strain had been 'polluted' with excessive inbreeding. Ah well, now all I have to do is find someone who has Bloodred stock in the UK....

I think I'ma add his name to my head or somethin Glenn had some 01708 500800 so give a ring and ask, lmao u might have to choose between that and yer anery stripe or jsut get em both lol
