Blue Light

My local pet store said it is fine to use a basic 25W Blue bulb from a hardware store in the tank for lighting. Does this sound ok??

Although the bulb is coloured blue, when switched on it is quite bright from the middle of the bulb. Will this efect my corn snake?

I've never used a blue light and I'm not sure if it's not visible to the snakes. I know the red infrared lights used for heat are not visible, but the light you are planning on using is basically a light bulb painted blue.

Yes it is a normal bulb but made from blue glass. Is that harmful to the snake?
This is what the guy in the shop told me to use. Its only a 25W and the temp is perfect in the tank but dont want to harm the snake.

I have seen the blue daylights in some reptile shops but they all seem to start at 40W upwards and screw fittings. The shop I went to didnt sell these but did say the normal bulb would be fine.

Will a normal bulb harm the snake?

The reason red lights are better, are because the light isn't visible to the snake, therefore it can be on constantly and won't light up the vivarium all night stressing out the snake.
Also I must add that with a bulb you should definately get a guard because those lights get hot.

The light is only on during the day as I have Under tank heater in the vivarium.

Just concerned that this type of bulb will harm the snake.

It does have a bulb guard around it

Normal blue glass bulbs for daylight should be fine. I have seen them as low as 15w, for night you also have the option of "moonlight" bulbs that put out a very low light these have a dark purple/blue glass.

Do you really need both to keep the temperatures at their belly warm? If the UTH does the trick during the night, you don't even need one during the day. You're really only concerned about belly heat, not the ambient air temp.

I use a blue daylight 25W bulb in my Kingsnake's tank. There is no problem using it during the day. These bulbs do have a slightly brighter lumination, but it does them no harm. If my snake did not like it she would remain under the hide all day, but she is always out sitting underneath it, so I would assume they have no problem with the brightness of the blue light.

slightly :-offtopic , we use a 25w blue bulb for our leopard gecko during the day, and she is more active than when we used the red reptiherp bulb. She doesn't seem bothered at all, and we can see her better during the day now
