Branches!!!!

Hi Everyone
This enquiry is for a friend of mine, she has been trying to get hold of a branch for her Corn's viv but hasn't had much luck from her local Reptile shop.
She has been advised to use a branch from an apple or birch tree. Is this ok?
I have had my snakes for quite a while now and purchased my branches from a shop, i prefere to do this instead of looking outside for them.

Is her safe for her to go Branch hunting outside? and is there any tree she should avoid apart from pine?

Thanks
Isobel

Branch's from fruit trees are ok

As long as the bark is stripped and the rest is cleaned with a water bleach solution then rinsed properly.
You then can let it dry naturally or you can stick it in an oven(if small enought)to dry it out at 350 for half an hour.
Should kill anything that is left on the branch

She could also try in the bird section of the pet store. They carry branches for bird cages and they work nicely in vivs as well. Good luck.

try the bendy exo terra branch.there really good as i can make it to any shape or length u want.

Ive bent mine in half and twisted it around itself.looks like jungle vines ad my snake loves it.also no worries about any bugs or stuff.

Cheap and easy to get hold of and no hassle to clean if ya need to

aquarium stores(bigals) will have a good selection, i bought a piece with a base that looks great and a fraction of the price of some the pieces i saw at the reptile store

i like what you did with the terra branch i have one in my supply that i havent used to thin my question is how did you anchor the branch in the viv so its soild

If the branch is cut off the tree directly and is still alive, you rarely have to worry about insects living in it. Insects like termites and ants prefer dead wood to make nests in. Simply washing it thoroughly to remove any contaminants should be enough. I've used sycamore and maple type tree branches for my Green tree pythons without a problem. The branches in my cornsnake's vivs are driftwood found in our local riverbed. I did wash those with chlorhexidrine and hot water and then microwaved them for 2-3 minutes.

I went to the river near my house and found a large piece of driftwood along with a smaller twisting one for climbing. I scrubbed them both with hot water and a stiff brush and then baked them at 350F for 45 mins. I then screwed the smaller twisting one on the larger thick one and my snake absolutely loves it especially because he can bask on the twisting one right next to his lamp.

Thanks everyone
Maybe it would be better to find your own logs and branches after all, its certainly a lot cheaper! My reptile shop charges a fortune

Thanks again

I took a chainsaw to part of good ol' mum's fruit tree years ago and it's still going strong. Looks good too and snakes love climing on them.
