That's not just a trait of fish keepers;) The only rant I have is a lack of capitalization of "i" :)

Having said that, it's not exactly easy to dispense general info that you may or may not have read already. My best advice is to read through the FAQs at the top of each sub-forum and also use the search function to search for anything you might have questions about. Many of the more basic questions have been covered many times over. The only thing I can think to tell you is to try to give dexter a few days to settle in before offering him something to eat and, in case you haven't already heard this, don't feed on the substrate.
Out of pure curiosity, what did the pet store recommend for substrate?

I don't think it's necessarily bad... As long it's not pine or cedar it's probably okay. Is it ReptiBark? That's what I use, but I'm going to switch to aspen soon, as that's what most people seem to use and reccomend. You probably should too, next time you go out and buy substrate.

Also, you said that you use a heat lamp. Corns do better with an under tank heat source, like a heat pad or a heat cable. Other than that, it seems like you have a pretty good setup.

As long as you've got the two hides, 80-85 warm side, 70+ on the cool, and 40-50% humidity (all measured by digital indoor/outdoor thermometer with a probe, the pet store stick-on dials and hi-range stick-ons won't do), you should be good.
