Brand New Hypo :)

I was able to get down to Repticon today, and I picked up a beautiful male Hypo that I decided to name Emery :) He's got a real interesting black checkerboard pattern on his belly, and his eyes are nice and bright with normal pupils. I always somewhat preferred them to the ruby ones of the Amels. I neglected to ask how old he was, as it didn't really occur to me, but I'd say he's about two and a half feet long. Anyone want to hazard a guess at how old he is? I'm not familiar with the growth rates of corns, as I've only ever had juveniles.

His viv is pretty bare right now, since to save myself money I picked up a kit for the time being. He's housed in a 20gal tank, hides on both cool and warm sides, and a makeshift water bowl towards the center. I'm most likely going to replace the UV lights within the next two or three days, in favor of a UTH, which I had wanted to get to begin with, but then I found the tank kit for a cheaper price. They'll do for now; and perhaps later on I can sell the lamps. The only real question I have now is about the bulbs I have a Day Glo bulb on the left side, and a Night Glo bulb on the right side. I'm a little skeptical that the Night Glo bulb is going to provide him with enough heat overnight, since it's not as bright. The thermometer I have isn't exactly the most reliable, and it's rather cheap and honestly it's hard to get a good temperature reading. But, that aside, I'm going to get him a UTH some time tomorrow, along with a better thermometer so I can stop guessing about my temperatures (I'm in the 82-83 range) and some things for him to climb around on.

As far as behavior, he was extremely active when I was looking him over at the con, and the breeder told me that he had fed him about five or six days ago, so he was due for a meal. He recommended I wait 'til Tuesday night to feed him, but would it do any harm to feed him Monday night instead? I wanted to give him some time to relax and de-stress, so I haven't handled him much. I suppose if I feed him tomorrow I won't be able to handle him for yet another few days, but I'm fine with that As of right now he's been openly hanging out in plain sight, which I'm assuming is a good sign, since he didn't immediately rush to his hides. He hasn't been in them once since we got him home, actually. I tried picking him up earlier, but he just shied away so I left him alone. He seems to be favoring the cool end of his viv right now, so the heated side may be too hot, but honestly I have my suspicions that it might not even be warm enough. Either way he has a cool spot to go to if he needs it, and his water dish is plenty big enough for him to submerge himself in. I'm much more confident in the UTH than I am with the UV bulbs so they're not something I plan on using for long.

Either way, he seems to want to mind his own business for right now, which I can certainly understand, and I know he's probably anxiously waiting for food. Hopefully after he eats, a few days will go by and he'll have warmed up a bit. Otherwise I'm very pleased with him, and I can't wait to start the "bonding process" :]

Here are some pictures (mostly of just his face because he wasn't in a position where I could get his entire body in the shot without disturbing him):

First of all, Welcome to the forum!!! You definitely have come to the right place for advice. Also, corns are addicting! Don't be surprised if you are wanting another one soon.

They usually recommend waiting at least 5 days to feed and then 48 hours after that to start handling. I definitely wouldn't feed him until you have the temps proper though. Too low temps or too high temps can cause regurgitation, trust me this isn't a fun thing to have to go through. I am going through a regurge problem with a hatchling right now, even though it was only once, and it is very stressful!!! So do a little more searching around on here before you decided to feed.

Thanks for the welcome :] And since I'm not too fond of the heat lamps, or my thermometer, I wasn't going to feed him until I could get a UTH installed and properly set up. I'm sure he'll be fine for another three days or so until I can get that up and running. I used a UTH with my Sunglow and it worked beautifully, so that's where my loyalties lie. I've never had to deal with a regurge, though I'm sure it'll happen at least once. Hopefully I can prevent it :]

What are you bedding him with? Beautiful hypo boy! Repticon sounds wonderful. Alot of vendors?

It's a black aspen bedding. I had my suspicions at first that the dyes, or whatever is used to color the wood, would bleed when it got wet but so far it seems to work just fine. It's a little thicker than your typical aspen shavings, which is kind of nice. As far as Repticon, it was heaven :] There are tons of people there! All kinds of herps too. Skinks, crested geckos, chameleons, pythons, and there were even a couple alligators. It was a great time :]

LOL I thought at first you had it on charcoal:nope: that is some wild looking stuff

very nice snake and goodluck with him!

My boyfriend was just saying he wished they made black aspen.
I will have to keep a look out for this stuff at the next expo I go too, neat.

Also welcome to the boards!

>>> My boyfriend was just saying he wished they made black aspen.

Someone posted a link the other day to black aspen and red aspen (available from Petsmart, I believe). I was planning to get some of the black aspen for my lavender snake so he'd show up better ;)

Haha, I'm glad to hear that no one has said, "Don't keep him on colored aspen!" I was worried about it at first, because of the fact that it's dyed, but I figure they wouldn't sell it for snakes if it wasn't safe for them.

Also, early this morning at around like, 8:00, I wake up to him zooming around his tank and sliding up the glass, bumping his nose on the screen. I'm wondering if that's just because he's hungry...? He's due for a meal real soon, but I'm really hesitant to feed him right now because I'm not sure if he's going to get the belly heat he needs with the lamps. What do you guys think? The thermometer reads about 81-82. He's also been spending a lot of time on the cool side of his tank, which I thought was interesting. I suppose if he were to bask on top of one of his hides, he'd be plenty warm enough, but I'm just concerned he won't know to do that :)

It could possibly rub off on him.. I used to use shredded up newspaper as an extra layer of substrate until I noticed that some of my snakes had ink smudges on their faces!!

It looks so cool though.. hopefully it works out for you.

Also, AWESOME addition! Let us know as soon as you get a full body shot! That one looks like a real gem.
That's crazy that it has a pattern on its belly... it looks like a Motley from what I can see of it, but I guess it must not be!
