Brand New Corn Mommy
Hello everyone! My name is Gina and I am brand new to the forum and hopefully soon to being a corn snake mommy. This will be my first snake ever so we're taking special precautions and trying to make sure we do absolutely everything right. Just finished getting the tank all se up, this evening we get to go see some babies. ^.^ Super excited! Any advice is absolutely helpful on what to ask the breeder or what to expect!
 
Welcome! You can ask for the feeding schedule, whether it has shed yet and if so when, and what it feeds on (f/t or live). Those are just a few basics that I can think of right now. :)

Make sure to check for kinks and look around the eys for little black specs moving around (those are mites). You could also ask if the snake has been dewormed. Doubt it would be but doesn't hurt to ask. Look for fluid coming out of the nostrils and/or labored/rattly breathing as these are signs of a respiratory infection.

Someone with more experience correct me if I'm wrong here but if you notice the snake "star gazing" or starring into oblivion even with commotion going on around it question buying that animal. Along with this, if the animal randomly thrashes around in its enclosure for no reason question the purchase. Those are signs of possible neurological problems. :O

Just look for one that is constantly flicking its tongue and actively "scans" its surroundings.

Thank you so much for all those recommendations! I will be sure to do so. I guess it helps that the breeder I am meeting is the one who recommended me to this forum and was in fact the first person to welcome me. :) Super excited and I hope this all goes really well for us. :D
 
Make sure the snake you get is eating frozen thawed prey (it's hard to switch from live-learnt this from forum not my own experience), make sure they are eating regularly so your not dealing with a snake who consistently refuses meals & may become malnourished, ensure the snake is shedding well & pooping well & ask to hold it before you make your decision. If there is dead/unshed skin stuck on the snakes body I would steer clear. Also check for kinks & ask about temperament. I personally wouldn't buy a snake that was being cohabbed either as it may be stressed when you 1st get it & take longer to settle in etc. As a 1st time owner you don't want to have to deal with curve balls like that. If you plan to breed you'll need to know its sex & genetic info will help aswell. If your not planning to breed from him/her then sex is not so much of an issue. I must say that all of this is said with stuff I picked up on the site in mind & not my own personal experience. I didn't come up against any problems when I got my baby but I also didn't know as much as I know now. If I'm wrong on any points I'm sure someone more experienced can correct me. Other than that good luck & welcome! :)
 
So long as our visit goes well then yes it will be a breeder from this forum! Was lucky to happen upon Christen when she had some babies available. Guess luck is with us right now! :)

I'm not thinking completely straight today (I'm paying for last night :)).

Also, Dee Dee is right. If your purchasing one from a breeder on this forum you are in good hands. Even then professionals are human too so you still need to ask questions about and check the animal out physically. Most of the breeders on this forum expect to get the interoggation and wonder about the person purchasing the snake if they do not. It proves to the breeder that you are going to take care of the animal properly.:)
 
Great recommendations!! Gina didn't have to go through stuff interrogation she came out with the right questions right out of the gate, well e-mail. :D We will have to keep you posted on our meeting tonight. We are going to pull out mom and dad and big bro to these guys to make sure she feels good and comfortable with snakes before she takes baby home.
 
Yay! I get to meet the whole family lol. I am too stupidly excited for this, I swear. Thank you all for the advice, I really do appreciate it. I will do my best to make sure everything is good to go. I want to be able to do right by whatever baby we choose. :)
 
So we got home about a half hour ago with our new baby boy! Tungsten has been busy exploring his new home from every angle. I thought when I brought him home he'd go curl up somewhere safe for a little bit, but he's been nothing but active! He's looked at every angle of his new cage, in and out of his water dish, through his hidey holes, and up the walls lol. Here's a few pictures of our beautiful boy settling in. He's really pretty! Wait till he burrows under the aspen and then pokes just his head out and watches you. Our corn does that and it's hilarious. He loves to be nosey! :D
 
Thank you! We think he's beautiful, had so much fun looking at all the babies and picking out our little guy. Funny enough he wasn't even one of the ones we'd originally planned to look at. Guess that proves the breeder knows best! She definitely fit us with a great little guy, can't wait to see how he does the next few days. So far he's still exploring, fearless little guy lol.
 
I am so glad that he is growing on you guys so fast and not the least bit scared of his new home. That is great. Here is his baby ( :laugh: ) picture.

LOL one of these days I will get a good picture of him too! He's so eager to look around right now. He curled up in one of his hidey huts for about five minutes, then we out and about again to look around. Super curious little guy!
