Brand New!

I am still new to all of this, however, I believe he is het for hypo... which from what I understand is the bloodred. I learned a little more in chat last night, but there is a lot I still do not know! lol

I would get a better thermometer, if you haven't already. Those gauge thermometers can be off by quite a bit... I had one that read 85 on the hot side, and it was actually 135, because I did not have my Under Tank Heater hooked up to a dimmer switch.

Oh lord. o.o I need to do that then. I was not even aware there were dimmer switches. Maybe I should unplug it now. It didn't have many instructions on the heater, unfortunately.

I would get a thermostat and a probe thermometer... I am actually saving up for a good thermostat for my snake rack. But a digital probe thermometer is awesome to get. And, right now I am running all of my heaters on dimmer switches that I pieced together from parts I got from Home Depot.

I am not entirely sure where to find better thermometers. I have these two but honestly they read exactly the same right now and I know that cannot be true. When I put my hand on the bottom of the tank and both sides one is obviously warm and the other is not.

Try Petco. I know that they have probe thermometers from time to time. Or look online. You can get better quality stuff from online.

I will try petco this morning then. I need to pick up some pinkies anyway to feed him tomorrow, so I may as well look into some thermometers too. Thank you for the recommendation!

If they have a dog trainer named Emily working, talk to her, and tell her Aaron at 1106 says Hi....LOL. If it is the same Emily that will be coming back to Las Cruces for school, she has quite a few reptiles, and is pretty knowledgeable about reptile husbandry. She usually has her Boxer, Maddie, or German Shepard, Rain (sp?), with her at work.

lowes and walmart have the Acurite thermos that everyone likes for around 10 to 12 dollars. They have a probe for the outside temp, measure the inside temp, and have a hygrometer built in. I have eight of them for my four tanks. :)

Lowes has dimmer switches for around 10 to 14 dollars and that is what I use. Take the probe from the thermometer that you put on the hot side and glue the probe to the glass above the uth. Put the probe dead center of the uth and then adjust temps from there. I would unplug it until you can control it though. Snakes can't sense heat from underneath very well and will just lay there and cook themselves. :(

Does walmart have dimmer switches too? Otherwise I may be driving all over this morning. He was poking around the warm side last night, but had burrowed on the cool side now. I will go ahead and unplug it, it doesn't feel HOT right now, just warm, but I don't wanna take any chances with him either.

If you check just above the uth on the glass it is probably close to 130 degrees. These uth's are capable of alot of output.

I'm not sure if your Walmart does mine doesn't but Lowes is literally right across the street so its no big deal. :D Lowes does carry the same thermo you would get from Walmart so I would start at lowes and go from there. The dimmer switches will be in lights/lamps and the thermos will be in outdoor stuff around the grills and mowers etc. At least that's where they are in my Lowes. :)

Yeah Gina go ahead and unplug the heating pad for now. I guess we forgot to talk about dimmer switches. I thought I remember you telling me you had prob thermometers but yesterday is a blur now.

As far as his genetics. No he is not a bloodred. I do believe he is caring the gene which is why he is redder than a normal hatchling. He does have a split belly pattern also indicating he is carrying the gene. But he comes from a normal het amel anery and suspecting bloodred X Hypo Snow. I really think he is going to be like his daddy and be a wanna be bloodred. Here is a pic of his daddy.

Okay, I unplugged the heater and will head to Lowes when they open around ten. Grab a couple of the probe thermometers and a dimmer so that I can make sure he has the right temperature he needs. They really should put that on the wrapping for the heater, that it doesn't stop at the 85 degrees it seems to recommend for most of the animals listed. Stinky thing. :\
