hello my oldest corn always has it's mouth open i think it might be breathing through it at first when i noticed it the tank was to hot and i thought it was panting like a dog would when they get to hot but i noticed that it's mouth it still open any clue if this is serious or not?

i got her out and handeled her and i knoticed that her mouth wasn't open but it was black stuff around her lower lip i hope it's just dirt but i'm not sure please if anyone has haved this happen please post i'm getting scared here:(

Mouth breathing is a bad sign. It most likely is a respiratory infection. Get the snake to the vet and it will probably be fine. I had a rescue Ball python that did this and he was cured of the RI, but he died for other reasons later

Yes and I believe "black stuff" can be a sign of mouth rot as well as breathing with open mouth.

I would take this snake to the vet A.S.A.P. :)

If its respitory infection raise your temps a few degrees higher than normal, keep the cage dry and clean, and avoid stressing it. It doesn't sound like mouth rot because it ussually has a white cheesy juicy look, and scabs form. It may have just pushed its snout into something trying to hide. Make sure it has good hide spots.

Make sure it has clean water. What do you use for substrate? Avoid cedar or pine because the fumes & sap are toxic. If it doesn't respond to this and it gets weak you need to get it to a vet who deals with reptiles.

You mentioned your cage being too hot. This can cause reptiles to breathe through an open mouth as they are trying to cool down internally. Keep your temps between 70 and 88. The best thing to use is a under tank heat pad under half the cage so the snake can thermoregulate its temp.
Good luck,

My 4-year-old female corn snake has been much more active than usual these past couple of months. I just noticed that she occasionally opens her mouth and makes a little noise. It is not regular or often like panting. I had made a vet appointment for next week because i noticed her losing a bit of weight, but her being active versus lethargic made me thing it was not critical. The opening of the mouth has me worried and she has not been eating.
