Breeder Feeder Issues... ;) (Dream)

Man... I've been too wrapped up in the fact that my mice are not breeding, 6 months of having mice and I've had 2 good groups and that's it...

Apparently its on my mind more than I thought... I had a dream last night that I checked on my mice and I was extatic that there were pinks, but all of them were horribly deformed and mutated, one had 3 sets of eyes in a row up its head, one had 2 faces, some had too many legs or tails, and one that looked like a teeny tiny bunny...

Man... I'm whacked. :eek1:

Are you still working with the descendants of the original slow breeders? If so it might be worth getting some new blood. I've had good results with mice from Carl and Linda Vail at the reptile show.

In fact, they did so well that I've fully stocked my freezer and I'm getting rid of al my mice finally. Ahh no more smell.

Plus my youngest hatchling is now big enough to take rat pinks and I've still got the semi odorless natal rats breeding.

I actually felt a bit guilty culling most of my mouse colonies, but I let it get a bit out of hand with far more mice than I really need anyway.

I've got one tub left with one young litter to grow out and one apparently pregnant female, so I'm not completely out of it yet =)

I culled the ones that were producing nothing and the agressive ones, which left me with 1 female left who was preg, she has only had 1 litter, but it was a nice big one, I kept back one of her males... (it had no nipples, looked male to me) a month later of no success and to testicals forming on the "nippleless wonder" I am guessing she was a female or some weird he/she... that mouse irritated the hell out of me, so it was fed off
I bought a new male a few weeks ago, and my female if finally taking on the "round" look. :crazy02:

My last mouse colony became food for a friends boa. They had two litters and ate both of them. Then never even bothered to get pregnant again. Now my rats are doing much of the same. I would swear that I thought one of my female rats was pregnant a while back, but no babies, no more belly growth, and now she's sleek and thin again. I'm starting with a new mouse colony, a black male, black female, grey female, and a beige female. MAYBE I'll have some luck. Hopefully your mice pick up on the breeding part. Good luck.

We bred a mice a few years ago and had the same problems. No babies, and the female kept eating her "boyfriends" the rats that we have do much better. I think a lot of that is due to refreshing the colony monthly. We buy about a once a month from a breeder, sell to a pet store weekly.....so when a female stops producing or a male does not produce at all they get sent to the store and we buy more adults. It's actually a lot more work than I thought it would be at first.....but the rat pups are great for my adult corns and the other rats get fed to the balls. So now we only have to buy pinkies during the baby season.

ARGH! I give up on these mice! My new male breeder... now has a huge TUMOR on his back. :twoguns:

These buggers are SO not worth this trouble... LOL! Time to cull em' and soak the tank and just get a nice leopard Gecko to put in it ;)

Are you sure it;s a tumor and not just a lot of scabbing from them fighting?

his fur is in tact and it looks as if he has a marble under his skin. I'm pretty sure its a tumor... :shrugs: I'm taking it back tomorrow and asking for a replacement... OR, just getting that Leopard Gecko I wanted ;) we'll see.

Have you tried scrubbing everything and everybody down so it's neutral territory?

You know, on second thought... mouse bathing is *not* fun. Get the gecko. Keep your sanity (and the skin on your arms). :crazy01:

LOL! That would have been the better option, to get the Gecko.

I went ahead and replaced the male with a new one, I cleaned the tank and all its contents and put in new stuff before putting him in there with the female.

*sigh* we'll see, if I have no babies tho by the next time Leopard Geckos go on sale... they're evicted and become dinner for my big Amel. :twoguns:

I was having similiar problems, I replaced the male and bought 2 more already pregnate females. Hopefully they will be good moms and jump start everyone.
