Breeding corns and rats

I know that you can breed corns with kings but can you successfully breed them with rat snakes?

yes. Cornsnake and Ratsnakes are basically the smae thing. Infact if you look at them you will see the only real difference is the size of the head. Ratsnakes heads are bigger. I think creamsicles and a few other morphs are a combo of a rat and a corn.

There are several species of rat snakes. Corn snakes are one of 'em. :) It should be much easier to get a corn snake to breed with another type of rat snake than to do it with a king snake.

Ceamsicles is already one line of corn x rat snake....so yes...
but please remember to label them correctly if you are really planning on breeding anything other than corns.....
I personally don't like any hybrids....and I know that a lot of people out there that has the same though as I do...so please remember to label them correctly so that people will know that they are hybrids okay?

yeah agreed w/simon . . .

I dont know why, but i dont see hybrids, or intergrades as "true" corn snakes. Although some are very pretty, i prefer other non-hybrid corn snake morphs, im not saying that breeding to different types of snake is wrong, this is my own opinion.

Neil...

I agree that corn snake hybrids are not "true" cornsnakes. I also think that if someone breeds hybrids, then it is their responsibility to be honest about the offspring. Honesty is the most important thing...people don't like being deceived. I would buy a hybrid if I liked it. I've seen some GEORGOUS junglecorns out there! I would be  however, if I bought one thinking it was a pure cornsnake.

CornCrazy
it's true that people should be honest...
but then it's very hard....
I mean even if every single one person states that the hatchlings are hybrids and they are F1 generations.

Then someone just breeds these F1s to a corn snake to make F2 and then F2 to another corn snake to produce F3 and so on...
and sooner or later....the 'mixed' blood is so small that people notice no difference between a corn snake and a hybrid....then someday a person will come out and say that their's is a pure corn.....and not telling people that back around 5-6 generations ago the first F1s are hybrids.....
and then sooner or later....something weird pops up becaues of the hybrid occuring before.....
so it's really hard for everyone to name that their snake is a pure corn....how do we know that a few generations ago...their grand grand...parents weren't produced by a hybrid....

So that is why I am so against breeding a corn snake with another speices of snakes.....even though its possible....I don't like it ...
just my own opinion....

That makes sense Simon!

I could see how that could come about, and I guess everyone definitely doesn't keep good records. That's unfortunate, though. This is my first year to be expecting any offspring, and I am already doing quite a bit of record keeping. I want to be able to track all of my babies' heritage...especially the ones I decide to keep. I keep extensive records on all of my snakes...when they eat, poop, shed, etc. It's time consuming, but well worth the knowledge. It lets me know when something changes or when one of my snakes might be sick.

To be honest, we (my daughter and I) have been considering breeding our cal kings to our corns, but now I am leaning toward changing my mind. Your reasoning and explanation of why you are against hybrids, has pushed me a little more in that direction. I'll will give the matter serious consideration before making a final decision!

Lisa - I don't think you would know if you bought a corn snake at a petstore. Most petstores don't care about where the snakes actually come from. There is one petstore near me that is very good about stuff like that, but most of them aren't!
