Breeding Hamsters

I breed mice and rats for feeders and as a hobby. I sell any extras to other people for either feeders or pets.

I want to begin breeding Hamsters for the same purposes. I read though that Syrian Hamsters need to be one to a cage because they'll fight each other, is that true?

I read Dwarfs like to live with each other though.

For the people who breed or who have bred Hamsters, how did you keep and breed them?

Thanks!

Hey,
Here's how I keep and breed mine...

One Syrian for every cage and 1 male with 2-3 female dwarfs. Works great. Just remember to add the female to the males cage when trying to breed them. Try to breed them at night and if they fight try again the next night. They are usually in heat every 4-6 days.

I know some people have had luck with dwarf hamster pairs housed together, but I made an attempt, and the female was EXTREMELY agro. I think it was because she was already pregnant though.

She had babies, but they were too fuzzy and my snakes wouldn't touch them.

When I was young I tried to house two Syrian Hamsters together. Within probably 4-5 months I had two cages... :dunce:
Yes, they will fight regardless of sex, and yea, adults will eat the babies.

Thank you both for the replies!

They were really helpful!

I guess I'll get a few Syrian and some Dwarfs...hopefully it works out well.

Thanks again!

A few years ago I took over the care of three Russain Blue Dwarf hamsters, and then added a Tibetin I think they are called (brown dwarf). I got them in July of 2003, one had one litter in Jan of 2004. By the end of that summer I had produced over 400 hamsters. They are very difficult to sex, they don't mix colonies like rats and are worse at mixing colonies then mice. If you put female in with male it works better or get a group of weanlings. I kept them in 10 or 20 gal tanks, habbit trails... They are cute and once they start mating they produce every 20-25 days. They sporadically eat their young. They will often bite you. The males are very protective. I have 1.2 Russian dwarf now, but haven't produced anything yet.
I got them this time as I have a good market for the weanlings, if they ever start breeding. I always refer to them at demon spawn. If I were recommending a pet for a child it would hands down be a rat, hamster would be my last choice. susang

I bred hamsters for a bit when I had a young boa. They were mean as all get out even though I housed them separately. The extra fur impacted my boa's intestines and I had to give it mineral oil... how crazy is that!?!
