Breeding question

I know Im probably going to sound like an idiot but here goes. I bred two of my females to different males. They both plumped up real good, and I assumed they would both lay around the same time. My first layed her eggs 16 days ago. The second, besides being obviously being fatter and lumpy has continued to eat and act pretty much normal except for being in a real pissy mood. She ate a small meal on monday. I have just about decided she is just ovulating and not gravid. This morning I decided to introduce her to another male to see what would happen. After about a minute of tail rattling and the Im gonna bite you stare she started the herky jerky dance and the mating was on. I guess my question is would a very gravid female mate if she is close to laying time, or do you think she is ovulating and just starting the whole process now?

If she were actually gravid and that close to laying, you would neither expect her to eat nor to mate. Both things point to her not being gravid yet.

I would agree with moretptiles assessment. I just reintroduced my third female to her male since she didn't lay eggs as she was supposed to, and bred successfully with the male. I will state that the breeding was IMMEDIATE, meaning no playing around. The 'first' breedings that I thought had occured (none were visually seen, but suspected evidence was found) never happened with any 'speed'.

I would also assume a gravid female would not breed, but there could be exceptions to the rule!

Thanks for the replies guys. I cant believe I was so far off on this girl. I would have bet money she was going to be the first to lay. I have been watching these girls grow up, you would think I would be able to tell when they are gravid. Maybe we will just have to wait a while longer for clutch number two. I was hoping to get the corns out of the way before my wife's Ball pythons need my incubator. Looks like its time to invest a few more bucks. Aint it fun?
