Bugs in the Substrate!

My daughter just bought a cornsnake. It's our third. We bought Zoo Med Forest Floor Bedding for the first time. I just went in to check on him and noticed there are hundreds of little teeny tiny white bugs all over the bottom. The cage has been empty and was cleaned thoroughly before we got the snake. Is this normal for the bedding to come with bugs?! :shrugs:

It shouldn't I would get the snake out first and check him over. Where did you get him from? Its possible they might be some kind of mites? Personally I stick with aspen bedding and I know it is the most highly recommended. I would recommend taking the snake out cleaning everything in the tank very throughly and then putting white papertowels (no ink) or some other substrate until you can get some aspen in there.

Sometimes the high moisture beddings get bugs while in the bag. You can bake and get rid of them or go to aspen. I tried the forest floor once and the bugs were awful. Some people have no problems with it???? susan

I use it with my milksnake. But I use it pretty dry. I'd guess the bugs infested after it came out of the packaging. You probably don't want it too wet anyway for the sake of your snake. I know that you have to get it pretty wet just to get it from the block though. Drying it out might actually solve the bug problem..

mmm, The bugs of slipped through the cleaning process,
If you take it all out and microwave it for 10 mins it should be ok.
Clean the tank and give the snake a bath and everything should be ok.

I use the ecoearth and have never had any problems
I put an entire log in a bucket of hot water and let it soak it all up and then I pull it apart and squeeze out all the water I can and set it aside on a paper towel until I get through the eitire brick adding a bit of water as needed. I then dump it into pillow case and hang it over the dryer door on the clothes dryer and set it on high for the 70 min cycle
Take it out and dump it into Gallon ziplocks

No trouble and its not bone dry nor too wet

It is from the bedding. I had the same problem with that stuff a few years back. I quit using it because of it. Somebody said baking it works but I have also read that freezing it also works.
