Built my first rack!

Spent about 4 hours on the thing. And I must say, I didnt think I could do it, nor did I think it would actually turn out so good! It fits 6 28qt sterilite bins. Or two 12qt bins on a single shelf, which is nice for yearlings.

Grand total: about $15 to make. If you add the flexwatt price, then its $45. Still not bad!

What do you guys think?

As you can see, I did make one slight miscalculation, hehe. The rack wasnt completely level so I had to add some height to it. Im going to eventually nail some of the scrap wood to level it out.

looks good  congrats! ;)

I need to get to work on making a rack for my larger snakes as well.

It does look good, congrats on building your first rack.

My only thought is, unless you're going to use the very bottom as a slot for a tub, why not just sand down the uneven legs? :shrugs:

Thanks for your comments!

You cant see it in the picture, but I have a support beam in the back thats flush with the ground so I cant sand it unfortunately. It would only take a minute really to add some height to it.

what did you use for the shelves?

MDF, and it was pretty cheap to, and its sturdy.

Way to go, you wild woman you :) Now. You have the room - what's next? hehehe

Im done, I swear! That rack is full, no more room, hehe. Actually, I will be putting two of the snakes in my living room in 30L as display snakes, freeing up two of the slots, but I swear, I am not getting any more snakes!

So you use those tiny containers for the snakes? I'm not being mean i'm being confused. I thought you need huge 55 gallon tanks for the bigger ones. What snakes are you putting in there? If you can keep snakes in those type of things I could get a bunch! Well if I had money for them. Just a question.

A lot of people on this forum use 28qt bins to house their adult snakes. Its about equal to the floor space on a 20L, which is the miniumum size requirement for adult corns. I tried finding a 30qt or larger bin but didnt have any luck. The smaller two pictured, are used to house my hatchling bairdi rat snakes. They will be moved to a larger bin when they are older.

The reason for making a rack, is to save space. I dont personally have room for seven 20-30 gallon tanks in my living room. I have actually found that my snakes are more secure in the bins. My motley was previously housed in a visionarium. He never came out, I never saw him. I moved him to a 28qt bin for the entire summer as he went with me to California. He was out every day, and really seemed more comfortable.

When I first got my snakes, I said I would never put them in a bin, as it seemed cruel. But now that I believe they like it better and it saves me space, I actually like it.

Hope that explains it a little better

Now I want a snake rack! I have only one snake,a corn of unknown color and she lives in a 29 gallon tank. She is still a baby though.Do you think I should make one? I mean like you said,it saves alot of space and my room already has Rosy (the corn) ferrets (3) and a Beta Fish. The ferrets reside in a closet and come ot for a good bit throughout the day.The fish is not a big thing as he is on my chest of drawers. If I had a snake rank it would save space. To bad I need more snakes :shrugs: .

Very good job Angela! . looks great and serves the purpose. I should have made ours with interchangeable size bins in mind. I made different ones with different bins. But again, GREAT JOB!!

Yeah Right!! That's what I said after 5; now I'm at 8 with 3 more to come. Are you taking orders for your rack yet, I could use 1 or 5.:grin01:

Nice Job!

I got alot of pets though. I got ALOT. I don't know if I can get another snake. We have only had 2 snakes too. A redtailed boa (I know! The stupidest beginner snake!) and Rosy. I hope I can get more......

It was kinda fun to make, considering all I did was walk into Home Depot and grab some wood, assuming I would somehow be able to figure it all out. Don't think I will be making another anytime soon, at least I hope not! :grin01:
