hi
this is a first time for me postin on the cornsnake forum but i wanted to know what i need in my cage the neccessary things. o and on other thing i was told by a guy that i dont need a heat lamp on my cage and all that i needed was an under tank heater i wanted to know if this is true and last but not leas send pics if you have em

Welcome, You will probably just need an uth (under tank heater) depending on the temps in the cage. What size are you using for cage? I use aspen bedding and forest bed. 2 hides and 1-2 water bowls. Let me know of any more questions.

You also might add some thermometers to that so that you can check temps in the warm and cool end. Otherwise, the rest of the suggestions were great.

here's what i have in my viv:

~2 hides (one on the warm side one on the cool)
~a rock for basking which doubles as a hide in the middle (not necessary, but i had it so i use it)
~a water dish (big enough for them to soak if they want/need to)
~a thermometer on either side
~substrate (i use aspen)
~a uth on the warm side
~a low wattage lamp on the cool side (my house is really cold so i need the light to keep the temps up. i use a white light for day and blue for night.)
~plants and a log (i've noticed my snake likes to climb a lot, some do, some don't)
~clamps for the lid (i use a regular 10 gallon viv right now, so the lid isn't secure enough just sitting on top. you'd be amazed at how strong those little escape artists are!!)

hope i'm not forgetting anything....

is it a red heat lamp or a white heat lamp?

white heat lamps mimic the sun, the/my snakes love it they need it for, well, basking in the sun. what i do is make sure when my sun comes up the lamp goes on and when my sun goes down the lamp is turned off, at night it is night time.

because its not a good idea to have viv;s near sunlit windows they really do need the sun.

no matter what that guy told you, give them the light. they need it. and fresh water every day

ok guys thanks alot any other subsrate types i can use cause i was told not to use stone/gravel in her cage so what can i use i also wanted to know what the basic thing are i need in my cage. i have a ceramic skull that i had never used it, it is an aquarium accesorie so was wondering if this could be used a a hide i can also remove her fro it if i need o and thanks for you guys suggestions

as far as substrate i use aspen. it was recommended to me and seems to be one of the more popular substrates. it's cheap, it's purdy and it controls the odor really well. repti-bark, newspaper and paper towels are also other popular options.

here's a link to a poll, as people answer it might help you to make your decision on substrate:

and yes, definitely avoid gravel, sand etc...

as far as the ceramic skull, i don't see where it would be a problem at all. just make sure you disinfect it before putting it in the viv (a 10% bleach solution works really well...just rinse until there's no bleach smell left).

hope this helped!

yep...a lot of people use those terra cotta type pots (some already have a hole). you'd be amazed at some of the cool and creative hides people come up with. flower pots, butter dishes, tupperware, wicker baskets....

just don't forget to disinfect it before you put it in the viv!!

Indirect light is more than enough for a cornsnake. They don't need UV like lizards and such. The only time I used a heat lamp was during the winter when my cool side was getting in the low 60's. It was turned off at night. The only thing about the skull is make sure it's open on the bottom. There's nothing like trying to get a snake out of a small hiding area that you can't get your hand into, or lift off them. A flower pot on it's side should work great if you can half cover the front to make them feel more secure.

yeah there is a hole in the bottomso i can get her out when i please or for emergency i iontend to use the heatlamp in the summer when the temp. in my house are low cause of the heater but dont intend to use it now cause when i leave home in the m,orning i can open my duct and let the hot air in from the heater and in the evening when i get home close it for a cool night time temp. o and if you want to know the tepm. in my room reaches like 85deg when i open the duct so do you think this could wok if not i will add the heat lamp i want to experiment with this for the first week
a funny thing that happened when i was pickin my corn out was that she had no hide in her cage so she manage to get into a peice of diftwood that had a crack in it
o and he also let me see her eat i fed her myself so i got a feal of it she didnt snatch it or nothing like that she gently reached for the pinkie and gently pulled it out of my fingers o and by the way she is eating frozen thawed pinkies
