Hi
I was wondering if bar cages are safe for keeping mice? I just put a mouse in one tonight, and it looks o.k. but I don't know if they can squeeze through the bars. Anyone have any exprience with them? :wavey:
 
I have one of my colonies in a Habitrail Mini cage made for mice. It all depends on the size of the mouse weanlings and smaller can fit though the bars. if the cage is originally made for a hamster.
 
my pet mouse is in a 20 g aquarium (her sisters have departed) my feeder pair are in a bar cage, inside a tub. they seem to enjoy climbing all over the inside of the cage, but their mess is contained, and if babies crawl out they won't go far
 
I've had plenty of escapes from wire cages..
I eventually gave up and moved everyone to a glass tank. Yes they can get out if they're determined enough.
 
Depends. Do you have a link to a pic we can view. I'm sort of lost As to what you mean about "Fancy Plastic" cages.
 
I recently had a young breeder male escape a wire cage. Poor little guy never even got a chance to breed. After that experience, I have switched mine to a 10g tank with a screen lid and clips.

Stacy, the cage she's referring to is called a "Habitrail" they are mostly made for hamsters and gerbils, but could be used for mice too. They are a combination of plastic and metal. They usually have many different compartments and tubes for connecting parts of the cage. Here's a picture of one.

I have a mouce version of the Habitrail. Its called the Habitrail Mini. My mice breed fine in it. As for the ones That Kimberly showed well the pink one at least. looks fine to me. Except for all the little nooks and krannies. But deffinatly an aquarium and glass tanks are fine. I have a rack system and a Habitrail Mini, and my mice produce fine and I have never had an Escape from my colonies. Only my kennel mice seem to go missing.
 
The pink one is for little girls who name their female hamster, Princess, and pretend she's a ballerina! I can't imagine having mice in that pink one. They have one that's all blue for boys too. Looks like a spaceship or something. I think its funny.
 
I had my mice in the plastic cages and two things happened within 24 hours that made me switch to aquariums:
the smell from them running on the wheel and peeing on it was so strong I couldn't leave it in the house without the smell greeting you as you walked in the front door and the mice were in the back office, it was that bad after one night.
Then my roommate's cat managed to pull the "extras" (all the pipes going to the wheel and lookouts) off and stick its paw inside. the extras would come right off on the two i had, it didn't take much effort at all. my mice chewed the cat up and it bled all over the place but wasn't able to pull them out. point for the cage... :grin01:
but (heres the kicker) when the cat left all the holes were open, the mice soon figured that out and escaped :bang:, we did eventually find all the mice, but I decided that an aquarium that has a locking lid and a wheel that i can pull out and hose down is much better for me. another plus is that with bedding covering everything the smell is not anywhere near as bad.
